* Indian government clears distribution of 5 million tablet PCs in schools, colleges

The Hindu: “In a move that will give a big push to broadband penetration in the country, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has cleared an ambitious plan to distribute 50-lakh (5 million) tablet PCs (personal computers) to students in the next financial year (2012-13). A note containing the nitty-gritty of the ambitious Aakash-2 project is likely to be placed before the Cabinet soon. …

The government wants to initially assemble the tablet PCs through its public sector undertakings (PSUs) and eventually indigenise it to maintain cost-competitiveness.

The DoT has declared that the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the research and design wing of the Department of Information Technology, will be the nodal agency for successfully implementing the Aakash-2 project. It will be assisted by the Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai. They will be responsible for finalising specifications, ensuring quality and testing the tablet PCs. The DoT has decided to rope in two PSUs — Bharat Electronics Ltd and ITI Ltd — for manufacturing and procuring the tablet PCs that will be priced between $55 and $70 (around Rs.2,750 and Rs.3,500).”

    Next Silicon Valley ?

Which will be the next Silicon Valley ?

Will it be Tanjore in Tamilnadu , or Unnao in Uttar Pradesh ?
Difficult to predict , considering that ,
 Jayalalitha is distributing 10 lakh Lenovo laptops to graduates in Tamilnadu , each year
    Whereas,
 Akhilesh Yadav will soon start distributing 15 lakh HP laptops to 12th Standard-pass in Uttar Pradesh , each year

 Akhilesh will also distribute 15 lakh tablets to 10th standard-pass students, each year

Of course , notwithstanding similar free hand-outs of laptops / tablets in the States of Punjab , Rajasthan , Assam etc

That pits a Chinese Lenovo versus an American HP in an Indian market

Neither Jayalalitha , nor Akhilesh are bothered that there is none Made-in-India product competing !
Kapil Sibal should certainly not bother where those 50 lakh Aakash3 tablets ( to be followed by another 22 Crore ), are going to come from

    All that matters is :

 these computers will impart 21st century skills to millions of Indian Youths,

 these will be loaded with lots of India-Made educational soft wares

 we must create several Silicon Valleys, all over the country to generate enough jobs every year to take care of ,

    • 410 lakh youth already registered with Employment Exchanges

    • 35 lakh students graduating from our colleges each year

    • 120 lakh people getting added to our workforce each year

 In his Republic-Day address , President Pranab Mukherjee said, “ The young cannot dream on an empty stomach. They need jobs “
