Narendra Modi: India Has Changed – India Real Time – WSJ

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to convince German industry that India is a reliable place to do business on his first visit to Europe’s largest economy as India’s leader.

“I am here to assure German companies that India is now a changed country — transparent, responsive and stable,” Mr. Modi told a delegation of Indian and German business leaders on Monday.

The Indian leader insisted that he was committed to introducing a “predictable” business environment in his country, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed him for the start of the Hannover Messe trade fair.

As the official partner country of the Messe—the world’s largest industrial trade fair—India is promoting its industrial and technological assets as Mr. Modi seeks to draw German industrial investment to his country.

Months after his election last May, Mr. Modi, of the conservative Bharatiya Janata Party, launched a “Make in India” campaign to promote the country as an investment destination and manufacturing center. His goal is to market India as an industrial hub for foreign players eager to take advantage of the country’s large workforce, raw materials and infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hard sell India as an attractive investment destination while deliberating with movers and shakers of global business at the Hannover Messe during his three-day trip to Germany beginning Sunday, besides holding talks with its top leadership.

In his maiden visit to the European nation as Prime Minister, Mr. Modi will have a packed schedule and wooing investors and projecting his ambitious “Make in India” initiative will be a major focus area.

Mr. Modi will inaugurate the Hannover Messe, considered the largest congregation of business tycoons, along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. India is the partner country of the fair this year where over 350 Indian enterprises are participating.

“In January, the world came to vibrant India in Gujarat and now exactly three months later, vibrant India is coming to the world in Germany to Hannover Messe,” German Ambassador Michael Steiner told reporters briefing on Mr. Modi’s trip.

Expecting that Mr. Modi’s visit will take the relationship to a “new level”, Mr. Steiner said Chancellor Merkel will come to India in October for the inter-governmental meeting where all major issues will be deliberated at length.

Xi Jinping Visits Tasmania, Is Given (Authentic) Lavender-Filled Teddy Bear – China Real Time Report – WSJ

What does one give to China’s visiting head of state as a keepsake to mark the occasion? Angela Merkel went with an old map that had a less-than-politically correct interpretation of China’s borders. Vladimir Putin presented an example of Russia’s cutting-edge consumer technology. Nahendra Modi handed over a bound copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text, in Chinese.

Alighting from his flight to Hobart, the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania, schoolchildren presented President Xi Jinping with a lavender stuffed teddy bear (at 48 seconds). Mr. Xi didn’t appear surprised or puzzled by why he was bring presented with potpourri. Then again, Bobbie Bear is a minor celebrity in China, and has done more than anyone to put Tasmania on the map for Chinese tourists.

Mr. Xi didn’t get to visit Bridestowe Lavender Estate which produces the bears – and where he would have been limited to buying one bear only, a measure taken by the farm’s management late last year to ensure sufficient supply to satisfy the busloads of Chinese tourists. Factories in China have produced knock-offs in numbers that far exceed the farm’s own production capacity, says owner Robert Ravens, which means a visit to Tasmania is the only way to be sure the bear you buy is real.

For Tasmania, Bridestowe holds potential of what China – hungry for clean and healthy produce, and with tourists increasingly willing to travel off the beaten track – can do for a struggling economy.

On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced at a dinner for the Chinese first couple at Parliament House that Bridestowe Lavender Estate had won the inaugural Australia-China Achievement Award for entrepreneurship. The award went to the farm for its “pro-active and innovative market entry into China and promoting Tasmania as a destination for Chinese tourists.”

Mr. Xi and his wife’s taking custody of Bobbie rounds out a busy schedule of cuddling as many Australian marsupials as possible. And while Bobbie might not have the same novelty value as Australia’s menu of unique fauna, it’s likely the only one the first couple will be taking home with them.

China signs deal to purchase 123 Airbus helicopters | Reuters

Airbus Group NV’s (AIR.PA) helicopter division sealed a $600 million deal on Monday to sell 123 helicopters to Chinese companies during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The orders, including both light single-engine helicopters from Airbus Helicopters’ Ecureuil family and the light twin-engine EC135, are being placed by three Chinese general aviation service providers, the company said.

The deal is among the biggest since China recently relaxed restrictions on low-altitude flying in its mainly military-controlled airspace.

The easing of controls has fueled projections of a sharp increase of orders to fill a gap in one of the world’s major untapped markets for helicopters and general aviation.

“We think these first sizeable contracts are signals that this market is starting to take off,” said Guillaume Faury, chief executive of Airbus Helicopters.

“Today there are 350 civil helicopters flying in China. In Europe there are 10,0000 and in the U.S. there are 12,000. Therefore the market potential for helicopters in China is huge,” he said in a telephone interview.

China currently buys about 50 helicopters a year out of an annual global market for 800 civilian helicopters, according to estimates by Airbus Helicopters, formerly known as Eurocopter.

By 2020, its purchases are expected to quadruple to 200 a year and by then, instead of 6-7 percent of the global market, it is expected to make up 20 percent of demand, Faury said.

* China to buy 50 Airbus planes for $3.5bn

BBC News: “China has signed a deal to buy 50 planes worth $3.5bn (£2.2bn) from Europe’s Airbus.

The agreement is part of a slew of trade deals signed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the start of a two-day visit to China.

An agreement on Airbus plane assembly in China was also signed, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday his country would continue to invest in the EU.

Emissions row

This is the first significant deal in China for Airbus, whose parent company is EADS, since a dispute between the country and the European Union over the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Effective from 1 January this year, the ETS charges airlines for the carbon they emit.

China and other countries say the system is not fair, as it charges airlines for the full journey, not just over European airspace.

Following this in March, EADS chief executive Louis Gallois said Airbus was facing “retaliation measures” by China.

According to him, China had blocked firms from buying planes made by Airbus. Beijing did not comment on the allegation.”

* China Invests in Germany Amid Uncertainty

New York Times: “As Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China tours Europe this week, it is no accident that Germany occupies a special place on his itinerary. After all, Germany is the one European Union country that has a trade surplus with China. And it has also been a focus of Chinese investment in Europe — so much so that analysts say some Germans are growing wary as Chinese businesses have been snapping up German engineering companies.

Mr. Wen, making his sixth visit in eight years, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, on Sunday opened the annual trade fair in Hanover, billed as the world’s leading showcase for industrial technology. They plan to witness the signing of an economic agreement at the Volkswagen headquarters, in Wolfsburg, on Monday. According to German media reports, the deal will include the opening of a new car plant in the far western Chinese region of Xinjiang.

Mr. Wen’s agenda, as with a follow-up trip planned by his likely successor, Vice Prime Minister Li Keqiang, seems aimed at presenting an aura of business as usual, even as trade tensions flare with the West and the Communist Party at home is embroiled in its biggest scandal in years, involving the deposed Politburo member Bo Xilai.”

Two birds with one stone: Collaboration with Germany & VW; and opening up a major auto plant in Xinjiang, one of the two provinces with significant unrest (the other, of course, is Tibet).
