A Sneak-Peek Inside Gap’s First India Store – India Real Time – WSJ

Gap Inc. is going retro for its debut in India, wagering that its branded sweatshirts will be best-sellers thanks to their association with Bollywood.

“These will be the first to fly out from our store,” said Stefan Laban, senior vice president at Gap International, standing next to a wall of Gap-branded hoodies, shoulder bags and caps in the New Delhi outlet, which opens Saturday. “We’re especially going heavy on logos in India.”

The reason? Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan may have something to do with it. Fans of the actor went Gap-hoodie crazy when he sported the garment in 90s blockbuster, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.” The fact it wasn’t available in India added to the sweater’s cachet.

Oliver Kaye, who heads Gap’s business in India, says that hoodie wasn’t sponsored by Gap and credits the Indian actor for drumming up interest in the retailer two decades before it actually arrived here.

“India associates Gap with movie stars,” Mr. Kaye said. “There’s some amount of novelty attached to wearing a Gap shirt here.”

Another popular Indian actor, Kangana Raunat, wore a round neck Gap-emblazoned shirt in “Tanu Weds Manu Returns,” a romantic-comedy released earlier this month, further positioning the brand as aspirational for Indians. Ms. Raunat is expected to be the chief guest at the store’s opening this weekend. Gap says they didn’t pay her to promote the brand either.

Best known for its khaki pants and arsenal of denim jeans, the American retailer is playing up its colored pieces and bling for the Indian market. The company has been criticized elsewhere for a monochrome palette and is lagging behind fast-fashion players such as teen retailer Forever21 Inc. and Inditex Group Inc.’s Zara.

“Indians love color,” said Mr. Kaye,  pointing to a rack of shorts available in shades from fuchsia to aqua to florals. The designs were selected after hundreds of consumer interviews in India. Gap’s merchandise in India is priced between 799 rupees ($12) to 5,999 rupees ($94.)  That’s more or less in line with how it prices its garment in its home market in the U.S.

The company has also identified a gap in the kids and babywear market in India. Nearly 40% of its store space is dedicated to its babyGap brand with everything from striped swimsuits for kids to hot pink sandals for toddlers.

“This space is extremely untapped,” Mr. Laban of Gap International said. “There’s really no competition in the Indian market when it comes to this segment.”

Gap plans to open 40 stores in India in the next five years, with about five each in New Delhi and Mumbai. Arvind Lifestyle Brands, which brought Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein to the country and now holds Gap’s franchise rights, expects the business to generate revenues worth one billion rupees ($156 million) by 2020. But quality real estate could be a challenge.

“There are very few quality malls in India. That’s definitely something we’re looking into as we plough ahead,” Ismail Seyis, who heads Gap’s franchise division, said. Real-estate consultancy JLL estimates that 70% of India’s 308 malls are struggling with anemic sales and high vacancy rates.

Gap comes to India six years after Zara and a few months ahead of Hennes & Mauritz AB’s planned autumn debut.

Now Is the Time to Start a Company in India says Pulse Founder – India Real Time – WSJ

Ankit Gupta, the co-founder of Pulse a news aggregating app that was purchased by LinkedIn, has spent the past two weeks traveling across India meeting startup founders and trying to find out what is behind the recent surge in acquisitions of Indian companies by U.S.-based firms.

His conclusion? Now is the time to start a company in India, but if that sounds too risky, here are a few other ways he suggests you can contribute to the startup ecosystem.

Work for an Indian startup. There is a huge demand for good talent, especially at senior levels. Salaries over $200,000 aren’t unheard of.

Invest in startups. Your college network can be very effective in finding them. Angel list and termsheet.io are good resources as well.

Use Indian products and send them feedback. Help Indian products get distribution in your country.

Christmas celebrations: Oh what fun | The Economist

CITIES across China blink with fairy lights, fancy hotels flaunt trees and tinsel, and glossy magazine covers display festive recipes and table settings. “Joy up!” reads a sign (in English) on three illuminated trees by a shopping mall in Beijing. The Chinese are doing just that.

In the first decades of Communist rule in China Christianity was banned, along with other religions. Now there are tens of millions of Christians in China and faiths of all kinds are blossoming. But this has little to do with the country’s fast-growing fascination with Christmas. In the West the holiday is a commercialised legacy of Christian culture; in China it is almost entirely a product of Mammon. Father Christmas is better known to most than Jesus.

Well before Christmas took hold in China’s cities, its factories were churning out Christmas essentials for consumption in the West. Industrially, China is now the Christmas king. According to Xinhua, a state-run news agency, more than 60% of Christmas trinkets worldwide last year came from a single “Christmas village”—Yiwu (in fact, a city), in the eastern province of Zhejiang.

But ever more of these goodies now stay in China, to satisfy a domestic craving. Some are tailored to Chinese tastes: Father Christmases playing the saxophone, for example, are a common decoration—no-one quite knows why. This year some shops are putting Santa hats on sheep; the Chinese new year in February, another excuse for hedonism, will be sheep-themed. A shop selling sex aids in Beijing displays a mannequin with a short Santa hot-pants suit, complete with white furry leg warmers.

Christmas in China never really ends. Decorations sometimes remain up year-round. In 2016 the south-western city of Chengdu will host Asia’s first “SantaPark”—a giant Christmas-themed amusement park modelled on a Finnish attraction. It will be known as the “official home of Santa Claus” (despite Chengdu’s sweltering summers and mild winters).

Family reunions are not part of Christmas tradition in China; for most people it is a chance to enjoy public displays of lights, and, for a growing number of younger Chinese, to exchange gifts with colleagues and friends (China’s home-grown festivals are not so centred around gift-giving). As elsewhere, Christmas in China is a merry time to shop.

Afghanistan, North Korea, and Somalia Are the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, With China in the Middle – Businessweek

So which countries are the most graft-ridden? According to Berlin-based Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index for 2013, Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are tied for that dubious distinction.

The global corruption-fighting organization notes that more than two-thirds of the 177 countries surveyed scored below 50. That’s on a scale from zero, or perceived to be highly corrupt, to 100, or perceived to be very clean. (The three worst countries all got an 8, and Ukraine, now racked by protests, got a measly 25). “The abuse of power, secret dealings and bribery continue to ravage societies around the world,” says Transparency’s Dec. 3 press release for the index.

Denmark and New Zealand tied for first place, each with a squeaky clean rating of 91. Both countries topped of the rankings last year, too, each with 90; Finland, which last year also got a 90, slipped by one point, tying with Sweden for a close second place this year.

* India, Germany sign six new pacts

Times of India: “India and Germany on Thursday inked six key MoUs including that for putting together 7 million for next four years towards joint research in the field of higher education and a pact for a soft loan of 1 billion for strengthening the green energy corridor.

A pact to promote German as a foreign language was also signed by the two sides following the 2nd round of inter-governmental consultations in Berlin.

Under pacts signed, both Germany and India have committed to 3.5 million each towards working on joint research and innovation programmes.

According to officials, under the strengthening of German language collaboration, currently 30,000 children in Kendriya Vidyalaya are learning German and under the pact they will try to increase the capacity.”
