Britain’s PM David Cameron Unveils Encyclopedia of Hinduism – India Real Time – WSJ

British Prime Minister David Cameron held a Diwali party in London to launch the new Encyclopedia of Hinduism, as his Conservative Party attempts to strengthen relations with the country’s large Indian community ahead of national elections next year.

The encyclopedia, which took 25 years to compile, contains 11 volumes and is published by the India Heritage Research Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati, head of the largest ashram in Rishikesh, a town in northern India.

More than 1,000 guests attended the unveiling of book in Westminster, near the Houses of Parliament. The event was organized by the United Kingdom’s ruling Conservative Party and the Conservative Party Friends of India among others.

Mr. Cameron and his wife Samantha lit a diya, or lamp, at the Diwali party that coincided with the book launch.

Andrew Feldman, chairman of the Conservative Party, said that the book, a product of research by 1,000 scholars, was a “phenomenal achievement.”

“The party wants to deepen and broaden our links with the British Indian community and with India and this event is one important step on our journey,” Lord Feldman said, according to a statement released after the event.

Wal-Mart Struggles to Crack Retail Market in India – Businessweek

As Indians celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali, executives at Wal-Mart India don’t have much reason to cheer. The company is still waiting for its big breakthrough in India, a market it has been trying to crack at least since 2007. That’s when the American retailer teamed up with one of the top businessmen in the country, Sunil Mittal, to open wholesale stores in India. If all had gone well, that partnership with Bharti Enterprises was supposed to have led to consumer-facing stores, too.

When then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012 eased restrictions on foreign ownership in retail, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) executives saw an opportunity in the world’s second-largest country. In September 2012, a Wal-Mart executive told Bloomberg News the two sides were in talks and retail stores were less than two years away.

Those discussions didn’t end well. Wal-Mart and Bharti Enterprises went their separate ways last year, dissolving the joint venture in October 2013. Wal-Mart bought out Bharti and took full control of the 20 members-only, cash-and-carry stores in India. After that, the company largely kept its India plans on hold: It’s been two years since Wal-Mart added new wholesale stores in India.

Seven killed in rebel attack in India’s Assam state – BBC News

At least seven people have been killed in an attack by suspected militants in India\’s north-eastern state of Assam, police said.

Rebels belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army opened fire on migrant workers who were playing cards late on Sunday in Goalpara district.

Nine workers were also injured in the attack, police said.

Assam has been plagued by ethnic clashes and separatist violence in recent years.

Goalpara has witnessed violence between the Rabha and Garo tribes.

Reports say that Sunday night\’s violence happened after Garo militants from neighbouring Meghalaya state fired at a group of Hindi-speaking migrant workers who were playing cards and gambling to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.

\”These militants in army dress came and fired indiscriminately… after the attack, they retreated to Meghalaya,\” AP Raut, a senior Assam police official, told the NDTV news channel.

Correspondents say many tribespeople resent the presence of outsiders, who they believe are taking their jobs and marrying local women.

The Times: “Festival season is fast approaching in India, with a feeling in some ways equivalent to the run-up to Christmas in the West, and, right on cue, a would-be Scrooge has stepped forward.

Buying gold is especially popular around Diwali and the Indian wedding season

Palaniappan Chidambaram may have little option, of course. The country’s embattled Finance Minister is struggling to shore up a collapsing rupee and revive a moribund economy, all with less than nine months to go before national elections.

So last week, as the rupee sank to fresh, record lows against the dollar — and with Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights looming in November — a panicking Mr Chidambaram wheeled out his latest package of measures designed to bolster the currency.

In a move that many Indians viewed as being distinctly short on seasonal good cheer, he slapped a ban on imports of gold medallions and coins, extending an attempt to curb the nation’s voracious appetite for the metal. Other measures included a reduction in the amount of cash that Indians and companies may remit overseas from $200,000 to $75,000 a year, a rule that Mr Chidambaram argued unconvincingly did “not amount to capital controls”.

Yet if the latter measure will not endear him to the millions of Indians with friends and relatives studying overseas, it is the gold ban that could prove a bigger issue. India’s lust for gold is undimmed and trying to temper it before the polls next spring — and before the wedding season that peaks around Diwali — could be catastrophic for the ruling Congress party.

The markets, certainly, were unimpressed by the minister’s efforts, sending the rupee crashing to new lows within hours of the announcement. The sell-off continued yesterday.

With the sliding rupee already forcing up the price of goods from petrol to food, Congress is desperately searching for new ways to head off a full-blown financial crisis as Indians prepare to vote. And while there is only so much that can be done to curb the nation’s demand for imported crude oil, the single biggest strain on India’s current account deficit, reining in India’s gold addiction may seem the next best alternative.

If his latest measures don’t work, and with that election due, it looks increasingly as if Mr Chidambaram’s days as Finance Minister may be numbered, one way or another.

As if policymakers didn’t have enough on their plates, India is in the grip of a new crisis. Last week, ministers held emergency talks to address a 36 per cent surge in the wholesale price of onions over a single weekend.

Onions are a key ingredient in virtually every Indian dish, so are viewed as almost as much of a staple crop as rice. Thus a fall in onion production prompted by poor harvests in the nation’s south has proved politically explosive. Shoppers have staged angry protests.

Yet there may be a welcome extra dish to this sorry tale. One option being considered by ministers is a loosening of trade restrictions with Pakistan, arch-foe and nuclear-armed rival, to start emergency onion imports.”

* How India’s buses got connected

FT: “Phanindra Sama remembers only too clearly the inspiration behind his business. “RedBus was started because of a personal pain point,” he says. “I couldn’t get a bus ticket.”

It was October 2005 and Mr Sama, who is known to everyone in his company simply as “Phani”, was heading home to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The journey involved a trip from Bangalore to his parents’ home near Hyderabad, nearly 600km to the north.

“I went to this travel agent to book a ticket. He made a few phone calls to the bus operators and told me there were no seats,” says Mr Sama. He tried four more agents. All called a couple of bus companies, but none could find a seat. Even more frustrating, all of the agents told him there might be a ticket out there – they just couldn’t locate it.

Mr Sama was stuck. “I am there, all flustered, staying in my flat,” he says of the long holiday weekend that followed. “I woke up the next day, and all of my friends were not there because they had gone home. It really pained me.”

An electronics engineer by training and working for Texas Instruments, he decided to do something about it. The result was RedBus, India’s leading bus ticketing service, which links thousands of unconnected bus operators and ticket agents, and sold more than 7.5m tickets last year.

Mr Sama’s entrepreneurial journey required figuring out India’s vast but fragmented $3bn bus system, which is dominated by small and often unreliable operators. Buses often leave from anonymous storefronts and frequently travel overnight. While some are upmarket, modern vehicles with wireless internet and air conditioning, most offer much more basic features.

When Mr Sama entered the industry, fast economic growth and urbanisation had vastly increased demand for travel. But most people couldn’t afford to fly and India’s celebrated train system struggled to cope with rising demand.

A lesson in listening

Phanindra Sama says being an entrepreneur has taught him a lot about listening. Speaking of the bus operators who have received bad reviews on RedBus, he says: “You get these calls from people saying: ‘I’ve been in the industry for 10 years and suddenly you come and rate me as a bad operator. What about my reputation?’ ”

“I think a lot of entrepreneurs probably don’t make time. If somebody says, ‘I want to talk to you’, they don’t make time,” he says. “We make time because that is very important for us.”

It is a lesson he has picked up not only from patiently listening to angry customers but also from reading management theory.

“There is a common theme in all those books. They say make space for others,” he explains. “I have dreams and passions, [but] everybody in the team also has their own dreams and passions. So if I have to get the best progress that we want, it can’t just be me standing there and having everybody do what I want.”

Even so, Mr Sama found India’s bus users were treated shabbily, with scant information on prices or bus companies. “This whole industry was very unregulated,” he says – a situation he admits has barely changed in the years since the company’s launch.

Despite holding down a day job, Mr Sama spent his weekends working out how to improve matters and even convinced his two flatmates to join him. Just under a year later, the trio had quit their jobs and were preparing to launch the RedBus website, along with two other software packages linking India’s disparate travel agents and bus companies.

The site has since become both popular and profitable, with revenues of Rs6bn ($110m) last year. It has also won fresh funding from the likes of Inventus Capital and Helion Venture Partners, investors attracted by an Indian intercity bus industry with revenues projected to grow to about $8bn over the next four years.”
