* Suzuki to Start Building Gujarat Plant Early 2013

Good news for India.

WSJ: “The local unit of Suzuki Motor Corp.  expects to start building its third factory in India early next year to meet potential growth in demand for its vehicles in the local market and overseas.

R.C. Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.,  said Friday that car sales in India will likely grow in single digits this financial year and the next due to the current slowdown in Asia’s third-biggest economy, as well as uncertainty over the pricing of diesel fuel and gasoline.

The Gujarat plant will be Maruti’s first outside the northern state of Haryana, where a July 18 riot by about 3,000 workers at its Manesar factory resulted in the death of a senior manager, injured more than 100 people and forced the company to suspend production.

The violence was the worst since the company began producing cars in 1983.

But Maruti executives say the plan to build the new plant in Gujarat isn’t linked to the labor unrest in Manesar.

Gujarat has a long coastline, and the new plant will enable the company to save on logistics costs in shipping its cars overseas, especially to Europe. Maruti exports its cars to more than 125 countries.

“The Gujarat project is going along online. We hope that in the early part of next year, we should at least get the groundbreaking done in Gujarat,” Mr. Bhargava told reporters.

Maruti has acquired 700 acres for the third plant from the Gujarat government. It will initially have an annual capacity of 250,000 cars a year when it opens in the financial year starting April 1, 2015. The capacity could be increased to 2.0 million vehicles a year, Maruti has previously said.

The company is investing a total of 40 billion rupees ($740 million) in Gujarat.”

* India riots: Court convicts 32 over Gujarat killings

BBC News: “A court in India has convicted 32 people for involvement in the 2002 religious riots in Gujarat state.

Rioting in Gujarat in 2002

The court acquitted 29 others in the case known as the Naroda Patiya massacre.

Among those convicted were former minister Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi, a former leader of the militant Hindu group Bajrang Dal.

A total of 95 people were killed in the rioting on 28 February in the Naroda Patiya area of Ahmedabad city.

Most of the convicted, including Ms Kodnani and Mr Bajrangi, were found guilty of murder and criminal conspiracy, reports said.

The trial began in August 2009 and charges were framed against 62 people. One of the accused died during the trial.

Ms Kodnani was the junior minister for women and child development in the Gujarat government when she was arrested in connection with the incident in 2009.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed when riots erupted after 60 Hindu pilgrims died in a train fire in 2002.

It was one of India’s worst outbreaks of religious violence in recent years.”

* Solar giant turns the desert green and blue in Gujarat

The Times, London: “Asia’s mightiest solar power farm has been switched on in the Indian desert state of Gujarat. It is part of a drive to transform the region into one of the world’s leading green energy producers and to provide electricity to some of the 400 million people who still have no access to it.

The Gujarat Solar Park, which spans a remote 3,000 acres near the border with Pakistan, started generating 214 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power 90,000 British households, over the weekend. The huge array of solar panels outstrips China’s 200MW Golmud Solar Park as the biggest in Asia. An official said that eventually the facility would reach a capacity of 1,000MW (edit – equivalent to a nuclear power station), bigger than any other single existing solar power plant in the world.

India, which is heavily dependent on imported coal, oil and gas for its energy requirements, is still chronically short of electricity and is aiming to build 20,000 megawatts of solar capacity by 2020.”
