Poland-China train leaves the station on first trip – World – Chinadaily.com.cn

The first “New Silk Road” Yuxinou railway return train from Poland to China kicked off on Thursday, the Chongqing government said.

Starting in Chongqing, the 11,178 km Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe International Railway passes through Xi’an, Lanzhou, Urumqi , Russia, Belarus and Poland, finally ending in Duisburg, Germany.

According to the government, it takes just 16 days on average to transport goods from China to Europe by rail, much less than via the sea.

Xu Qiang, director of the Development and Reform Commission of Chongqing Municipality, said China launched the first train from Poland to Chongqing to enhance cooperation between China and Europe.

“It is an important landmark for our New Silk Road, which will strengthen China’s bilateral economic ties with the regions along the railway,” Xu said.

In recent years, Poland and China have formed closer ties in political and economic perspectives, said Jacek Zuber, chief of the Department of International Cooperation Ministry of Infrastructure and Development of Poland.

“Yuxinou railway is one of the most important cooperation projects to us, especially as the railway will bring great opportunities to our trade with China,” he said.

The first train will bring electronic products, auto parts and steel products to Chongqing.

Most steel producers in India, the world’s third-largest coal importer, depend on overseas coal shipments and are trying to buy mines in Africa and Europe.

SAIL-led International Coal Ventures Private Ltd (ICVL), whose five participating firms are all state-owned or state-controlled, has been scouting for mines since 2009.

Verma said they had already invested in due diligence for the Polish assets.

JSW Steel Ltd, India’s third-largest steel maker, has already bought U.S. mines that produce the coal used in steel making.

India’s coal imports rose 21 percent to 152 million tonnes last year, with most of that being thermal coal used to generate power, according to Delhi-based research firm OreTeam. (Reporting by Krishna N Das; Editing by Jo Winterbottom)

* China Wants More Trade With Central and Eastern Europe

New York Times: “Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said Thursday that China wanted to double trade with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to $100 billion a year by 2015, and pledged billions in loans to help promote investment in the region.

Mr. Wen made the announcement at a gathering in Warsaw that brought together business and political leaders of countries stretching from the Baltics to the Balkans that are eager to do business with China, even as they struggle to overcome stereotypes still held by many in the region who associate the Chinese as makers of inexpensive toys and designer knock-offs.

Infrastructure, high technology and green technology are target areas for growth, Mr. Wen said, announcing that Beijing would set up a $10 billion line of credit to support investment in these specific industries. He also pledged an additional $500 million in funds to be made available to Chinese companies seeking to make first-stage investment in the region.”

China continues to woo everyone. And Mr Wen is making himself very busy in his final year in office.
