To Combat Crowds, India’s McDonald’s Now Lets Diners Order at the Table – India Real Time – WSJ

Tired of having to elbow your way through pushy crowds to get your fast-food fix? McDonald’s MCD +3.87% in India has a solution for you: Skip the long lines and order a Maharaja Mac from your table.

The more than 350 McDonald’s outlets in India each get about 4,000 customers a day on average. That’s twice the number of customers that come to the average Mickey D branches in the rest of the world. As part of an experiment in crowd control, one franchisee has started allowing burger fans to order and pay through roaming cashiers who take orders and payments on Wi-Fi enabled tablets and credit-card machines.

The queue-quelling technology is already being tested at the McDonald’s at Mumbai’s Phoenix Mills mall. It will be rolled out in 200 more branches this year, said Amit Jatia, who runs most of the McDonald’s in India.

“India is changing,” he said. “You have to keep evolving with the changing needs of the consumer.”

Mr. Jatia’s Hardcastle Restaurants runs 202 McDonald’s outlets in western and southern India, while another group controls 166 restaurants in northern and eastern India.

Explosions on Train in Chennai Kill One – India Real Time – WSJ

Two explosions on a train in the Indian city of Chennai killed one person and injured nine others Thursday.

Authorities believe two bombs were planted in two separate coaches of the Bangalore to Guwahati express train and blew up as it sat at the Chennai railway station in southern India.

“The police are already on the job, they are investigating what kind of bomb it was and what was the purpose,” Chennai Central station General Manager R.K. Mishra told reporters.

One of the bombs killed a 20-something woman that was sitting on the seat under which it was placed, Mr. Mishra said.

Two of the nine injured were hospitalized for serious injuries. Police and bomb squads have checked the train for more explosive devices, said Mr. Mishra.

“Initial investigation reveals that the blasts were low intensity,” said an official with the Indian Railways.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in a region of India which is rarely a target of these sorts of attacks.

The explosions came despite heightened security as India votes in its massive, rolling general election. In Srinagar in the northern state of Kashimir two explosions targeting election rallies injured 14 people this week.

On April 12, a suspected landmine blew up a bus carrying poll workers in Chattisgarh, killing 14.

Teenage German tourist raped on Indian train – The Local

A German charity worker was allegedly raped while sleeping on a train in southern India on Friday – the second European to report a rape in the country within a week.

The teenager was attacked while asleep on a train travelling from Mangalore in western India to Chennai on the east coast, where she was heading to volunteer with a charity.

Police said she was reportedly too scared to shout for help and alert passengers in her carriage, Indian news site NDTV said.

Officers said a man had been arrested in Chennai on suspicion of the rape.

The German, said to be just 18 years old, complained to police on Monday, three days after the alleged attack.

Seema Agarwal, Inspector General of Police, said: “The young lady took several days to muster courage to report to the police. Though it\’s too late for medical examination, we have handled the case in a very sensitive manner,” NDTV reported.

On Tuesday a 51-year-old Danish woman was allegedly robbed and gang-raped in the capital New Delhi. Police said 15 men had been arrested.
