For a country obsessed with fair skin, why are so many Indians buying self-tanners?

Market research firm Euromonitor has just released a study on the grooming habits of the world. It has one rather surprising finding – Indians are slathering on massive dollops of tanning lotions. Indians are apparently second only to Chinese in consuming what the researcher calls self-tanning products.

It doesn’t add up.

Indians are the highest consumers of whitening creams, the same survey shows, and that is unsurprising. The country’s problematic preference for fair skin is well known. Fairness cream ads featuring big Bollywood stars are ubiquitous. In 2010, AC Nielsen estimated the size of the market for skin whitening products at $432 million.

But there is not a single well-known brand of skin-tanning lotions in the country.

I find this ‘For a country obsessed with fair skin, why are so many Indians buying self-tanners?’ interesting and amusing, to say the least.

When I was in New Delhi (up to the age of late twenties) this particular issue of fair skin cropped up in every social circle, and from time to time various creams were advertised endorsed by Bollywood stars. It was interesting and amusing then as it is now!

However, My complexion is somewhere in the middle i.e. on the scale of 1 to 10 (1 being dark and 10 being very fair), I was very content with myself. Well, moving to UK, I was some what surprise to see that many Westerners prefer somewhere in between the above scale! They would do anything to achieve this e.g. sitting in the sun for hours and even fake tan. Sometimes the results are not flattering!!

Here again, I remained content with what I have.
