Amitabh Bachchan: ‘If she gets paid more than me, that’s fine’ – BBC News

One of India’s biggest stars, Amitabh Bachchan, says he’s glad people are talking about the gender pay gap.

He recently starred in a film called Pink about feminism and attitudes towards women in India which has caused quite a stir in the country.

He spoke to the BBC’s Yogita Limaye.

Priyanka Chopra in Pink Rubber Gloves Joins Modi’s Clean India Campaign – India Real Time – WSJ

In pink rubber gloves and a surgical mask, former Miss World and Bollywood movie star Priyanka Chopra is the latest celebrity to be enlisted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India Campaign.

In an 11-minute-film posted on YouTube, Ms. Chopra can be seen beginning a cleanup of an area where she filmed part of the movie “Agneepath.”

“I remember that there are people who live here and children who play on mounds of garbage and that is their life,” Ms. Chopra says in the short film as she directs a group picking up garbage in Versova in Mumbai. “The idea of doing this is to create something that is long-lasting,” Ms. Chopra adds during the video. “ I wanted to do something a little more than just cleaning a few piles of garbage.”

The film ends with shots of the area spruced up with murals and flower pots.

The Clean India campaign is Mr. Modi’s plan to create a sanitized India by 2019 in honor of the 150th anniversary of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. Ms. Chopra is the latest Bollywood star to get involved after Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan who have both been pictured with brooms in hand pledging support at the prime minister’s request.

For a country obsessed with fair skin, why are so many Indians buying self-tanners?

Market research firm Euromonitor has just released a study on the grooming habits of the world. It has one rather surprising finding – Indians are slathering on massive dollops of tanning lotions. Indians are apparently second only to Chinese in consuming what the researcher calls self-tanning products.

It doesn’t add up.

Indians are the highest consumers of whitening creams, the same survey shows, and that is unsurprising. The country’s problematic preference for fair skin is well known. Fairness cream ads featuring big Bollywood stars are ubiquitous. In 2010, AC Nielsen estimated the size of the market for skin whitening products at $432 million.

But there is not a single well-known brand of skin-tanning lotions in the country.

Chinese Startup Oppo Ropes In Bollywood Stars for India Launch – India Real Time – WSJ

As competition intensifies in the global smartphone market, major players including Samsung Electronics and Apple have been spending heavily to market their latest devices through ads and celebrity endorsements. Now, even some startups in China are getting in on the action.

After enlisting famous Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio to star in television commercials to promote its smartphones in China, Oppo is trying to expand in India by using a similar tactic. It is featuring Bollywood actors Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor in its latest TV commercial as it tries to expand in the fast-growing country.

Oppo started as a manufacturer of MP3 players, Blu-Ray players and feature phones in Dongguan, southern China in 2005. It released its first smartphone in 2011, selling mainly in China, but it is now trying to expand in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia and Vietnam that have a young population and rising purchasing power.

* Imagine if every resident of Mumbai had a car?

IT Decisions: “Professor Stéphane Garelli of IMD Business School and the University of Lausanne delivered one of the opening keynotes, describing the future of the world economy. One of the key points he made related to consumers in emerging economies creating ‘needs’ from what were previously ‘wants’.

“In China, everybody is buying a fridge. How many times have you bought a fridge? Once you have one then it lasts a long time before you replace it. You are living in a replacement economy where you are just upgrading what you already have. In China, you have no fridge, you want one. You have no TV set, you want one. You have no telephone, you want one…” he said.

The idea that enormous tranches of humanity are about to start consuming items they have never used before, such as cars, washing machines, fridges, and air conditioning, is a scary thought for environmental campaigners. Economic growth benefits those who are lifted from poverty, but how can the world really cope with billions of new drivers all expecting their own car?

Professor Garelli said: “The problem for the environment is that the infrastructure is not following [consumption].  For example in China, in 2020 they will buy 30m cars and only 15m will be sold in the USA. So everybody wants a car, but there are not enough roads for all of them. You need growth, you need traffic control, etc – the infrastructure has to grow in parallel.”

Professor Garelli went on to explain: “This means there is an enormous environmental impact and I think that this growth has to be checked. At a certain stage they will have to slow down some access. There are some countries where people can perhaps wait for a car – can you imagine if every single person in Mumbai has a car?”  …  “
