Xi congratulates Cuban leaders on 60th anniversary of revolution victory

BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday warmly congratulated Raul Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Miguel Diaz-Canel, president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, on the 60th anniversary of Cuba’s revolution victory on behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government and people.

In his congratulatory message to Raul Castro, Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba over the past 60 years, the Cuban government and people have made great achievements with hard work in the cause of socialist construction, which are highly appreciated and congratulated by the CPC and the Chinese government and people.

The relations between the two parties and two countries have stood the test of international vicissitudes and achieved fruitful results, making the two sides good friends, good comrades and good brothers, Xi noted.

Xi said he attaches great importance to the development of the China-Cuba friendship and is willing to work together with Raul Castro to lead bilateral relations to keep marching forward.

In his congratulatory message to Diaz-Canel, Xi said that the Communist Party of Cuba and its people are endeavoring to update and improve the nation’s socialist system, which will guarantee new developments in Cuba’s socialist cause.

Xi mentioned Diaz-Canel’s historic visit to China around a month ago, during which the two leaders proposed a blueprint for bilateral ties in the new era, adding that he is willing to join hands with Diaz-Canel for continuous development of China-Cuba relations.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also sent a congratulatory message to Diaz-Canel on Tuesday, saying Cuba has enjoyed flourishing national developments and will usher in a brighter future.

The two countries have always understood and supported each other, pushing bilateral relations for an all-round and in-depth development, said the premier.

Li also voiced hope that with the joint efforts from both sides, their traditional friendship will continue to bear fruits.

Xi, Trump exchange congratulations over 40th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic ties

BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday exchanged congratulations on the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.

In his congratulatory message, Xi said China-U.S. relations have experienced ups and downs and made historic progress over the past 40 years, bringing huge benefits to the two peoples and contributing greatly to world peace, stability and prosperity.

History has proved that cooperation is the best choice for both sides, Xi said.

Currently, China-U.S. relations are in an important stage, he noted.

“I attach great importance to the development of China-U.S. relations and am willing to work with President Trump to summarize the experience of the development of China-U.S. relations and implement the consensus we have reached in a joint effort to advance China-U.S. relations featuring coordination, cooperation and stability so as to better benefit the two peoples as well as the people of the rest of the world,” Xi said.

For his part, Trump said Jan. 1, 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of U.S.-China diplomatic relations.

Great progress has been made in the development of bilateral ties over the past years, he noted.

Trump said it is his priority to promote cooperative and constructive U.S.-China relations, adding that his solid friendship with President Xi has laid a firm foundation for the great achievements of the two countries in coming years.

China marks 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) — China held a grand gathering Tuesday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the country’s reform and opening-up, a great revolution that has changed the destiny of the Chinese nation and also influenced the world.

President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the event which began at around 10 a.m. at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Premier Li Keqiang presided over the meeting.

The celebration started with all participants rising to sing the national anthem.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, read a decision to award the personnel who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s reform and opening-up.

The people are “the creators of the great wonder of reform and opening-up” and “the source of power” to drive the campaign started 40 years ago, Wang said.

According to the decision made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, 100 Chinese were awarded the medals of reform pioneers and 10 foreigners were honored with China reform friendship medals.

Chinese leaders presented the medals to the prize winners.

Three-year-old assaulted on Delhi bus rape anniversary

A three-year-old Indian girl is in critical condition after she was allegedly raped by her neighbour in the capital Delhi.

The accused, a 40-year-old security guard who worked in the building the child lived in, has been arrested.

Police found the girl unconscious and rushed her to hospital where she is undergoing surgery.

The incident occurred on Sunday, which was the sixth anniversary of the brutal gang rape of a student on a Delhi bus.

Delhi Women’s Commissioner Swati Maliwal said the incident “let down” the bus rape victim, whose attack saw country-wide protests and a tightening of rape laws.

There is still no clarity on the condition of the girl or whether she will survive the attack, which local media have described as “brutal”.

Locals in the area found the accused and attacked him after the incident came to light, the Times of India newspaper said. It also quoted police as saying that the accused was treated for injuries before they arrested him.

The girl’s parents, who are daily wage labourers, were away when the incident occurred. The accused allegedly lured the girl with sweets and picked her up from outside her house.

Police have registered a case for rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, which could see the death penalty handed out to the accused.

The incident, which has prompted a fresh wave of anger and outrage in India, comes after a series of high-profile cases against children this year. In April, the brutal gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Indian-administered Kashmir dominated headlines. In June, hundreds took to the streets in the central state of Madhya Pradesh over the rape of a seven-year-old girl.

The scale of abuse in India

  • A child under 16 is raped every 155 minutes, a child under 10 every 13 hours
  • The number of reported rapes of children increased from 8,541 in 2012 to 19,765 in 2016
  • More than 10,000 children were raped in 2015
  • 240 million women living in India were married before they turned 18
  • 53.22% of children who participated in a government study reported some form of sexual abuse
  • 50% of abusers are known to the child or are “persons in trust and care-givers”

Macao holds int’l parade to mark 19th anniversary of return to motherland

MACAO, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) — The government of China’s Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) held an international parade Sunday afternoon to mark the 19th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.

The parade attracted more than 70 groups from the Chinese mainland, the Macao SAR and the Hong Kong SAR, as well as those from foreign countries including Japan, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Mozambique, Malaysia, among others.

The parade featured performances such as folk dances, acrobatics, stilt walking, Chinese martial arts and puppet shows.

The parade started from the renowned Ruins of St. Paul’s and ended at Sai Van Lake Square, where the groups took to the stage one by one.

The parade, one of the major cultural events in Macao since 2011, was organized by Macao’s Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office.
