UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — A Chinese envoy said Friday that China attaches great importance to its cooperation with the United Nations while meeting with reporters from major international media at the UN headquarters in New York.

“We attach great importance to our cooperation with the United Nations, and everything goes well,” Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the UN, told reporters from The Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Bloomberg News, and others.

The ambassador stated that China will “stand firm” with the United Nations and “give strong support” to the organization “by defending multilateralism and supporting an international system with the United Nations at its center.”

He also said that China will support “an international order on the basis of international law and the purposes and the principles of the UN Charter.”

As one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, “China will continue to play a responsible and a constructive role in addressing global political and security issues,” he said.

Noting that the world is “far from being peaceful,” the envoy said that China will continue to work hard on issues including in the Middle East and in other parts of the world.

In general, he said, China will continue to promote peace “through diplomatic means and political dialogues,” adding it will always be China’s basic position.

“We will try our best to be helpful and to be contributing more to world peace and security,” he noted. “China will continue to be positively engaged in peacekeeping operations for that purpose.”

Zhang started his role as China’s new permanent representative to the UN earlier this week.

UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (Xinhua) — A Chinese envoy on Tuesday called for adherence to a political solution in Libya.

“There is a need to stick to a political solution. China has always believed that the Libyan issue must be settled through political means,” Ma Zhaoxu, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the Security Council.

“We hope that parties to the conflict in Libya will put the interests of the country and the people first, respond to the calls of the international community for a cease-fire as soon as possible, ease the tensions and return to the path of settlement through peaceful dialogue and consultation.”

He added that the safety and security of civilians must be protected and the humanitarian situation in the country must be improved.

Ma asked for synergy of international efforts. The international community should respect Libya’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Countries with influence should push for the resolution of differences among the parties, help build trust and provide constructive assistance to the parties in achieving a cease-fire and returning to political dialogue, said the Chinese ambassador.

He also stressed the need for coordination. China supports the promotion of the political settlement process in Libya under the leadership of the United Nations, and the good offices of the UN secretary-general and his special representative for Libya, he said. China also supports the active role of regional organizations such as the African Union, and hopes that the mechanisms will fully leverage their advantages and enhance coordination and cooperation.

Cooperation only right choice for China, U.S.: Chinese envoy

UN-US-CHINA TRADE RELATIONS-CHINESE ENVOY-BRIEFING

UNITED NATIONS, May 18 (Xinhua) — Cooperation is the only right choice for China and the United States, said China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ma Zhaoxu on Friday.

The economic and trade relations between China and the United States are the “ballast” and “propeller” of this important bilateral relationship, said the Chinese envoy when hosting a briefing on the U.S.-China trade relations at the UN headquarters in New York, adding that it is not only about U.S.-China bilateral relations but also world peace and prosperity.

Representatives from more than 100 UN member states and international agencies attended the meeting.

Referring to the consultations between the two countries since the United States unilaterally provoked the frictions in March 2018, Ma said that China will resolutely defend its core interests and will never give in on major issues of principle.

China strongly opposes the U.S. practice of imposing additional tariffs, said the Chinese envoy, while expressing the hope that the United States and China could work together, meet each other in the halfway, address each other’s concern based on mutual respect and equality, and strive for a mutually beneficial agreement.

“The agreement between the two sides must be equal-footed and mutually beneficial,” he said, noting that China’s three core concerns — remove all the additional tariffs, work out a realistic amount of purchases, and improve the balance of the wording of the text — must be addressed.

The Chinese economy has maintained steady growth and has shown positive momentum, Ma told the audience. “The trade protectionist measures of the United States will have an impact on the Chinese economy, but it can be overcome.”

“The Chinese economy is a sea, not a small pond,” he added. “We will continue to promote reform and opening up according to our own pace, and promote high-quality development of the economy according to our own timetable and road map, to realize the long-term stability and growth of the Chinese economy.”

According to Ma, paying mutual respect to each other’s core concerns, and making mutual concessions on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit are the premises of expanding cooperation, and only in such a way, the trade issues between the two sides could be resolved.

Chinese envoy calls for political solution in Venezuela, asks to lift sanctions

UNITED NATIONS, April 10 (Xinhua) — A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for a political solution to the Venezuela crisis and asked for the lifting of unilateral sanctions against the country.

“China calls on the Venezuelan government and opposition to seek a political solution through dialogue and consultations within the constitutional and legal framework,” Ma Zhaoxu, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the Security Council.

China supports the Venezuelan government’s efforts to safeguard the sovereignty, independence and stability of the country and holds that Venezuelan affairs should be handled independently by the Venezuelan people themselves, said Ma.

China’s position on the Security Council’s involvement in the Venezuela issue has been consistent and clear, he said. “Our point of departure has always been to uphold the spirit of the UN Charter and the basic norms governing international relations, promote a peaceful settlement of the Venezuela issue and maintain long-term peace and development in Latin America.”

“China opposes the interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs by external forces, opposes military intervention in Venezuela and opposes the use of the so-called humanitarian issue to achieve political aims,” said Ma.

He called on relevant countries to lift unilateral sanctions against Venezuela.

History has proven repeatedly that unilateral sanctions will only further complicate situations and affect people’s everyday life. It will not help resolve problems, nor will it bring peace to a country, he said.

“On the one hand, we hear a lot of talk about care for the well-being of Venezuelans. On the other hand, we are seeing increasingly tighter sanctions on the country. They are contradictory and the motive is dubious,” said Ma.

“(We) hope that relevant countries will promptly lift unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, create normal conditions for its economic and social development, and lend help and support to the country in accordance with the basic principles of UN humanitarian assistance.”

He asked the international community to contribute positively to Venezuela’s peace, stability and development.

The peace and stability of Venezuela are in the fundamental interests of the country and its people, and serve the common interests of all parties, Ma said. “We hope the international community will do things that are truly conducive to the stability, economic development, and improved livelihood in Venezuela.”

Under the condition of respect for the sovereignty of Venezuela, the international community should provide constructive assistance to the country and promote a smooth settlement of relevant issues as soon as possible, he said.

The Chinese ambassador said China will continue its cooperation with Venezuela on the basis of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and common development.

To help Venezuelan people overcome temporary difficulties, China has decided to provide emergency supplies for livelihood to Venezuela, said Ma.

Relevant supplies are on their way to Venezuela in batches. On March 29, the first batch of medicines and medical supplies were delivered to the Venezuelan government, he said.

China’s assistance to Venezuela is in keeping with its long-held principles for foreign aid. It is intended to help Venezuelan people overcome negative impacts caused by external interferences and sanctions with no political conditions attached, said the Chinese ambassador.
