URUMQI, April 18 (Xinhua) — A medical team of eight experts who aided Pakistan’s fight against COVID-19 returned Friday night to Urumqi, capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The team, consisting of experts in various fields including respiratory, critical care and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), arrived in Pakistan on March 28 and visited cities of Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.
The Chinese experts communicated with the Pakistani federal government, national and local health authorities, hospitals and medical schools, as well as the Red Crescent.
The team members shared their experience through several video conferences and offered practical, specific suggestions to their Pakistani peers concerning the diagnosis, clinical treatment and epidemiologic study of COVID-19, and the application of TCM, hospital infection control and the construction of temporary hospitals.
The team also assisted with improving Pakistan’s guidelines on diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 to help build an efficient epidemic prevention and control system in Pakistan and enhance its screening and testing capabilities.
Meanwhile, the experts carried out epidemic prevention guidance and popular science education for the Chinese embassy in Pakistan, Chinese enterprises, overseas Chinese and Chinese students in the country.

BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that the Chinese side is willing to join hands with the British side as the country is in a tough fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic.
Wang made the remarks during his telephone conversation with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.
He said that the epidemic is breaking out in many parts of the world, and the number of confirmed cases in European countries such as Britain is increasing, for which China expresses sincere sympathies with the British side and believes that the British people can come together and ultimately overcome the epidemic.
“When the Chinese people are facing the severe challenges of the epidemic, the British side has extended a helping hand, which we will remember in our hearts,” said Wang, adding that at this difficult time when Britain is fighting the epidemic, China is also ready to join hands with Britain.
China still faces an arduous epidemic prevention and control task, but it will manage to provide a batch of medical supplies to the British side and help facilitate the purchasing through commercial means, he said.
He also said that the top priority for China’s epidemic prevention and control is to avoid a rebound, adding that China is willing to carry out joint prevention and control with Britain, and hopes Britain can strengthen border control, maintain the essential cross-border flow between the two countries, and prevent cross-infection to the greatest extent.
Wang said that the Chinese side has been sharing epidemic-related information and carrying out anti-epidemic cooperation with the international community in an open, transparent and responsible manner since the beginning of its fight against the outbreak, adding that the country is currently providing various forms of support to nearly 100 countries in need.
What is alarming is that some people are trying to politicize the epidemic, label the virus and stigmatize China, Wang noted, adding that such detrimental acts will undermine the solidarity and cooperation of the international community and hinder the joint efforts of all parties to combat the epidemic.
Wang said he believes that all countries, including Britain, will uphold an objective and fair attitude and resist this narrow-minded approach.
Noting that many overseas Chinese, including Chinese students, work, study and live in Britain, Wang called them bridges of friendship between the two countries.
It is hoped that the British side will attach great importance to and protect their health and safety, and provide timely and necessary medical care, he added.
Raab spoke highly of China’s notable achievements in fighting the epidemic, and thanked China for its sympathies with Britain, and for providing medical supplies and facilitating procurement.
Noting that the British side attaches great importance to China’s experience in the COVID-19 fight, Raab said his country stands ready to strengthen coordination with China and other countries in epidemic prevention and control, vaccine research and development, and in assisting countries with fragile medical systems, so as to promote international cooperation and strive for an early victory over the epidemic.
The British government will spare no effort to ensure the health and safety of overseas Chinese in his country, he added.
Voicing opposition to politicizing the epidemic, Raab stressed that the British side totally agrees with China’s position that the origin of the virus is a scientific issue that requires scientific and professional opinions.
He also urged that all sides work together to overcome the hardship amid the epidemic.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday stressed racing against time and keeping abreast with history to reach the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
“Time and history wait for no one as they are both on the side of hard workers,” said Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Xi made the remarks while addressing a Chinese Lunar New Year reception held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Under the strong leadership of the CPC, all members of the Party, armed forces and people of all ethnic groups must fear no wind or wave, rise up to challenges and keep marching toward the glorious goal of national rejuvenation and the great prospect of building a community with a shared future for humanity, Xi said.
At the reception, held by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, Xi extended Lunar New Year’s greetings to Chinese people of all ethnic groups, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and overseas Chinese.
Party and state leaders Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji, Han Zheng and Wang Qishan were among the more than 2,000 people attending the reception. Li Keqiang chaired the event.
Xi noted in his speech that new and significant progress has been made in the past year toward building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
He mentioned major events during the year, including the fourth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland and resolute efforts to safeguard the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, as well as celebrations marking the 70th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
A campaign themed “staying true to our founding mission” was also carried out to demand the more than 90 million Party members remember to always stay with the people.
“In the new year, we must secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and fighting poverty,” Xi said, adding that achieving this first centenary goal is a milestone in the process of realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
The results, Xi said, must be recognized by the people and stand the test of time.
Xi said the Chinese nation, with a civilization stretching back over 5,000 years, has made indelible contributions to the civilization and progress of mankind. But the nation was held back for too long by various internal and external troubles in modern times.
That is why, Xi said, the Chinese people have always had an extraordinary sense of urgency and appreciation of the underlying trend of the times.
From now to the middle of this century, the Chinese people will strive to build China into a great modern socialist country. It will be a great era in which a new splendid chapter of the Chinese civilization will be written, he said.
Every Chinese person must feel proud of living in such a great era, Xi said.
“We must maintain strategic direction and resolve, stay united, work hard and forge ahead against all odds,” Xi said.

KUNMING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended Chinese New Year greetings to all Chinese people.
He wished Chinese people of all ethnic groups a better life and the country greater prosperity in the new year.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks during a three-day inspection tour of southwest China’s Yunnan Province which concluded Tuesday.
During a visit to Sanjia Village in the city of Tengchong on Sunday afternoon, Xi learned about poverty alleviation efforts and called for efforts to speed up the development of ethnic minorities and areas with large ethnic minority populations.
After joining local villagers in making rice cakes, a traditional local festival food, Xi noted that shaking off poverty is the new starting point, calling for vigorously promoting rural vitalization after China completes the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
According to local custom, Xi beat a wooden drum of the Wa ethnic group three times to bless the coming year.
Later that day, Xi went to the old town of Heshun, a gateway on the ancient Southern Silk Road, where he visited a village-level library built over 90 years ago.
Visiting the memorial hall of Ai Siqi, a renowned philosopher, Xi said the country needs a large number of talented individuals who can explain the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context well and who can use easy-to-understand language to spread the Party’s new theories to more ordinary households.
Visiting an ecological wetland of Dianchi Lake in Kunming on Monday, Xi stressed resisting the old way of developing the economy at the cost of the environment.
Dianchi Lake, once among the most polluted lakes in China, has seen its ecology greatly improved after years of conservation efforts.
Inspecting market supply for Chinese New Year at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center, Xi demanded a sufficient supply of safe and reliable goods during the festival.
There, Xi extended Chinese New Year greetings to local residents, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese nationals.
Xi then went to the former site of the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming. He stressed the close link between education and the fate and future of the country and noted that the goal of China’s education system is to nurture a new generation of capable young people who are well-prepared to join the socialist cause.
After hearing the work reports of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee and the provincial government on Tuesday morning, Xi encouraged Yunnan to break new ground in promoting ethnic unity and progress, pushing forward ecological conservation, and pursuing greater cooperation with South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Xi urged efforts to promote high-quality development, accelerate building a modernized economy, consolidate the achievements in poverty alleviation, boost the healthy and sustainable development of tourism, while continuing to fight air, water and soil pollution.
He also required further opening-up to neighboring countries, speeding up the building of connectivity networks and strengthening cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Xi demanded efforts to strengthen governance capacity in border areas and areas with large ethnic minority populations, implement the plans to boost the development of ethnic minority areas and ethnic groups with small populations, step up the fight against cross-border crime, gangs and their “protective umbrellas,” and maintain the stability of border areas.
On the anti-poverty fight, Xi ordered focusing on areas with extreme poverty, preventing people from falling back into poverty due to illness, injury or the lack of follow-up policies, and further aligning developmental poverty relief with protective poverty relief.
On Party building, Xi said the “staying true to the Party’s founding mission” campaign should be regarded as a lifelong task for strengthening Party building among all Party members and a source of inspiration in the new era.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) — China and Suriname on Wednesday decided to upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership of cooperation.
The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Surinamese President Desire Bouterse at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
During the talks, Xi said Suriname is one of the first Caribbean countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. The relations can be considered a model of friendly relations and equal treatment between countries of different sizes.
The development of bilateral ties is in an important historical period, and China is willing to work with Suriname to take the opportunity of the Belt and Road cooperation to uplift the ties to new heights, said Xi.
Xi stressed that the two countries should maintain support on issues involving each other’s core interests and major concerns.
Xi called on the two sides to deepen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure construction, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, communications and energy, and explore cooperation in new areas such as new energy, digital economy, tourism and ocean economy.
“China encourages more capable Chinese companies to invest in Suriname,” said Xi.
Noting that Suriname is one of the countries with the largest overseas Chinese population in the Caribbean area, Xi said it is necessary to promote cultural exchanges, facilitate personnel exchanges and strengthen cooperation in areas such as education and law enforcement. China will also send a medical expert panel to Suriname.
The two sides should maintain communication and coordination on global issues, practice multilateralism, build an open world economy and safeguard the common interests of both countries and all developing countries, said Xi.
China is willing to continue to speak out from a sense of justice for Suriname on multilateral occasions and work together with the international community including Suriname to constructively participate in the multilateral process on global climate issues, he said.
Xi added that China has always respected the right of Latin American people to choose their own development path and supported the process of Latin American integration and the handling of regional issues through dialogue and consultation.
China is willing to work with Latin America to promote the construction of the Belt and Road and deepen China-Latin America cooperation by the principles of equal treatment and mutual benefit, said Xi.
Bouterse extended congratulations on the 70th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, and said under Xi’s leadership, socialism with Chinese characteristics will be a success and will bring benefits to the Chinese people and people around the world.
Underscoring the historic and political significance of his visit, Bouterse said Suriname will firmly uphold the one-China principle and support China’s national reunification.
He said Suriname is grateful for China’s help in his country’s economic and social development, and ready to work with China to enhance exchanges at all levels, cement political mutual trust, expand economic and trade cooperation, deepen people-to-people exchanges and take the joint construction of the Belt and Road as an opportunity to upgrade bilateral strategic relations.
Suriname stands ready to work with China to safeguard multilateralism, international law and basic norms of international relations, Bouterse said.
After the meeting, Xi and Bouterse witnessed the signing of several cooperation documents.

- New system to enable businesses and government agencies to verify mainland-issued travel permits

Hong Kong and Macau residents and “overseas Chinese” may soon be able to have full access to public services on the mainland using their China-issued travel documents, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Xinhua reported on Wednesday that the National Immigration Administration was putting a platform in place to enable government agencies and businesses to verify mainland-issued travel permits for Hong Kong and Macau residents.
“As soon as the platform becomes operational, these overseas travellers can, from October, have access to 35 public services, ranging from transport, to finance, education, communications, medical care and accommodation,” the report said.
According to the report, “overseas travellers” cover Hong Kong and Macau residents and ethnic Chinese living overseas.
But it did not say why the new measures did not apply to people from Taiwan.
The administration did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

The new measure appears to be part of a long-term strategy by Beijing to foster closer ties between the mainland and Hong Kong and Macau.
In the last few years, the central government has launched a host of incentives for Hong Kong and Macau residents and businesses, including opportunities in the Greater Bay Area development plan in southern China.
Ivan Zhai, executive director of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in China-Guangdong, welcomed the new measure.
“If such an arrangement can be fully implemented, Hong Kong businesspeople who operate on the mainland will be thrilled,” Zhai said.
The Hong Kong business community has long lobbied for relaxation over areas such as train ticketing and hotel registration.
Zhai said that although Hong Kong and Macau residents could now book high-speed train tickets with their mainland-issued travel permits, there were few ticket machines that could automatically read the permits, complicating the process.
“There are also hotels on the mainland that can only entertain guests with Chinese identity cards and currently Hong Kong travellers can only go to hotels that are authorised to accept the mainland-issued travel permits,” he said.

According to the report, there will be stiff penalties for departments or businesses misusing information collected through the platform.
Zhai said Hong Kong businesspeople who travelled to the mainland often were more likely to be concerned about convenience than the risk of invasion of privacy.
“If you are a frequent traveller in China, you would have expected that the relevant departments of the Chinese government already have information about you anyway,” he said.

NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Overseas Chinese in New York City presented a brilliant concert late Friday night in Lincoln Center to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and the United States and to celebrate the forthcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
The 2019 Golden Night Concert, staged by The Asian Cultural Symphony of the USA, featured a mix of well-known classical western and Chinese symphonies, operas and songs, attracting hundreds of overseas Chinese and American audience.
Young Chinese songwriter and singer Huo Zun performed three songs at the concert, including his signature song Rolled-Up Pearl Curtain, the unique pop-song One Night in Beijing, and a Peking opera excerpt Butterfly Love from The Great Concubine of Tang in cooperation with renowned Peking opera singer Li Jun, winning prolonged warm applause.
Li Jun’s Peking opera excerpt Morning Sun in Heart from Climbing Tiger Mountain and Wang Hongli’s Henan opera excerpt from Mulan enchanted the audience with the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture.
Famed female vocalist Zheng Xulan staged her classic pieces Shepherdess Song and The Sea, The Homeland, renewing old memories of overseas Chinese.
Also presented included The Toreador Song from Carmen by baritone Nigel Smith, Tambourin Chinois and Zigeunerweisen by violinist Lin Zhaoliang, and Hulunbuir Grassland by the Krliu family singers.
The concert served as a platform for overseas Chinese to convey their goodwill. Over the past 40 years, Chinese American made significant contribution in bridging China-U.S. exchange in a variety of aspects. As the center of classical music in New York City and a coveted platform by artists, Lincoln Center witnessed another wonderful cultural exchange between the East and the West.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) — The Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco on Friday held a reception to celebrate upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year and honor the contribution of overseas Chinese to forging a close and strong relationship between China and the United States.
In an address read by Deputy Consul General Zhang Jianxin to hundreds of participants at the event, Chinese Consul General Wang Donghua said the vast majority of overseas Chinese have participated in one way or another in the process of building a wealthier and stronger China over the past 40 years since China introduced the policy of reform and opening-up in 1978.
Wang said he hopes overseas Chinese will seize historical opportunities to render firm support for China’s further reform and opening-up and work harder to boost the China-U.S. friendship.
Speaking at the event marking Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 5, Peter Chi, a veteran leader of the Chinese community in San Francisco and the San Francisco Committee to Promote Reunification of China, said overseas Chinese are keen on cementing a more stable China-U.S. relationship.
“The year 2019 will witness several wonderful events for China, including the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China … and 40th anniversary of the Message to Compatriots in Taiwan issued by the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People’s Congress of China on Jan. 1, 1979,” he said.
Many overseas Chinese, particularly those living in the United States, are proud of the tremendous achievements that China has made in the past 40 years, Chi said.
“As a member of the San Francisco Committee to Promote Reunification of China, I earnestly hope Taiwan will eventually be reunited with the motherland,” he added.
On the other hand, overseas Chinese also would like to see the U.S.-China relations further develop and grow in a stable, healthy and smooth way, and they all will have a role to play during this process, Chi said.
Florence Fong, a prominent leader of the Chinese community in northern California, said 2019 is the Year of Pig, and in the 12-year-cycle Chinese zodiac, the sign of Pig represents wealth, fortune and happiness.
“Over the past years, the Chinese people have emigrated to various places in the world and they have brought the brilliant Chinese culture and heritage to every corner of the globe,” Fong said.
“Today, Chinese Lunar New Year has been observed in 133 countries, making it the most celebrated festival in the world,” she said.
Fong said she hopes China, as the country of her origin, will continue to grow into a more prosperous country in the future.
California State Assemblyman Scott Weiner presented a certificate of recognition to Deputy Consul General Zhang to honor the “strong relationship” between San Francisco and China.
