* Asian Buyers Snap Up Half of New London Homes

WSJ: “If you’ve just moved into a newly built apartment in central London, don’t be perplexed if your neighbors speak mostly Chinese.

Market-cooling measures in Asia have helped fuel interest in London’s real estate market—long a popular destination for property buyers on the prowl, says property consultancy Knight Frank. Last year, overseas buyers spent $3.5 billion on apartments undergoing construction in central London, up 22% from the year earlier.

Together, buyers from Singapore and Hong Kong snapped up nearly 40% of all such apartments in central London. Adding in buyers from Malaysia and mainland China, Asian buyers accounted for roughly half of all purchases. By comparison, U.K. buyers made up just 27% of all purchases of apartments under construction, according to Knight Frank’s latest figures. Such figures were generally consistent with those seen in 2011.

Among overseas buyers, more than two-thirds bought for investment purposes, says Knight Frank, while another third said they were motivated to buy for a child enrolled at a local university.”

* Indian Govt planning to build 10-15 greenfield airports

India is finally starting to take infrastructure spending more seriously. It’s about time.

Times of India “Giving a push to aviation infrastructure development, the government is planning to build 10-15 greenfield airports and modernising 50 others in the non-metro cities over the next few years.

“About 50 non-metro airports are being modernised within the next two years and overall 10-15 new greenfield airports are being planned,” civil aviation minister Ajit Singh told reporters on the sidelines of the 49th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation of Asia-Pacific region here.

Maintaining that the civil aviation sector in India was witnessing an annual growth of nine per cent, he said, “We expect a double digit growth in air traffic in the next few years.””

* Chinese Military Official Shamed After Attack on Flight Attendant

WSJ: “Even close ties to the military can’t shield boorish Chinese officials from being called out for behaving badly in the age of social media.

China’s state-run Xinhua news agency on Saturday issued a report largely confirming the account, originally published on Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblogging service, of an Air China flight attendant who said she was bullied by a Chinese official and his wife in a conflict over carry-on luggage during a flight on Aug. 29.

The official is identified in the Xinhua report as Fang Daguo, a member of the Communist Party Standing Committee in the Yuexiu district of the southern metropolis of Guangzhou. Mr. Fang is also political commissar for the Yuexiu Armed Forces Department.

Internet users had earlier helped identify Mr. Fang after the flight attendant, whose own identity remains unclear, posted an account of the attack on the microblogging service that quickly went viral.”

* China to buy 50 Airbus planes for $3.5bn

BBC News: “China has signed a deal to buy 50 planes worth $3.5bn (£2.2bn) from Europe’s Airbus.

The agreement is part of a slew of trade deals signed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the start of a two-day visit to China.

An agreement on Airbus plane assembly in China was also signed, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday his country would continue to invest in the EU.

Emissions row

This is the first significant deal in China for Airbus, whose parent company is EADS, since a dispute between the country and the European Union over the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Effective from 1 January this year, the ETS charges airlines for the carbon they emit.

China and other countries say the system is not fair, as it charges airlines for the full journey, not just over European airspace.

Following this in March, EADS chief executive Louis Gallois said Airbus was facing “retaliation measures” by China.

According to him, China had blocked firms from buying planes made by Airbus. Beijing did not comment on the allegation.”

* Agni-II successfully test-fired

the Hindu: “India successfully test-fired nuclear weapons capable strategic ballistic missile, Agni-II, for its full range of more than 2,000 km from Wheeler Island off the Odisha Coast on Thursday.

The launch was carried out by Strategic Force Command personnel from a mobile launcher. The Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, which carried a dummy payload of 1,000 kg, was fired at 8.46 a.m. from a rail mobile launcher. Agni-II has already been inducted into the services and belongs to the group of Agni class of strategic missiles which form the bulwark of India”s nuclear deterrence policy.

Top Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials told The Hindu from Wheeler Island that the two-stage solid-propelled missile followed a text-book trajectory and zeroed in on to a pre-determined target point in the Bay of Bengal with a single to two digit accuracy after a 700-second flight.

They said the re-entry systems worked well and all other systems functioned perfectly.The electro-optical systems and telemetry stations tracked and monitored the missile’s flight path. Two ships stationed in the vicinity of the target point witnessed the terminal event.

The SFC personnel conducted the trial as part of regular user exercise. Agni-II is 20 metres long and capable of carrying a nuclear warhead weighing one ton.

It was the third success in a row for Agni variants following the launch of Agni-V in April and Agni-1 recently.”

* Wuhan airport to build new terminal

China Daily: “A new terminal will be built in the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport before 2015 to meet increasing passenger demand in Central China’s Hubei province, local media reported on Friday.

The project will cost about 16 billion yuan ($2.5 billion), and will occupy an area of 370,000 square meters with a 3,600-meter long and 60-meter wide runway, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reported.

The new runway can guarantee the safe takeoff and landing of the Airbus A380, the report said.

The project, already approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, will start construction before October. The terminal will be built in a flying-phoenix shape, representing local culture.

A parking apron with capacity for 60 planes will also be built, the report said.

According to airport data, more than 12 million domestic and foreign passengers arrived at, or left from, the airport last year, only 1 million less than the airport’s capacity of 13 million.

The airport is expected to receive about 14 million passengers this year.”

The current Wuhan airport was only opened in 1995, and a new one is planned for2015 – looking to the future.

London Heathrow was built in 1929 and expanded to its modern configuration after WW2. It is limited by its two main runways. Yet, after years of debate, neither has a decision been made to build a third runway nor has an alternative solution been discussed seriously – there being so many contenders ranging from expanding Gatwick or another nearby airport or even expanding provincial airports like Manchester or Birnmingham; plus a proposed contentious new airport in the Thames Estuary favoured by London Mayor Boris Johnson. * Chinese Firm Pursues Hawker

WSJ: “A Chinese bidder is in advanced talks to buy the bulk of aerospace company Hawker Beechcraft Inc.’s businesses for $1.79 billion, an approach that could raise political concerns given U.S. sensitivities about previous Chinese attempts to buy American assets.

Superior Aviation Beijing Co. will have an exclusive right for 45 days to negotiate to buy Hawker’s corporate jet and propeller plane operations, the U.S. company said. If a deal is reached, Superior would serve as the opening bidder in a bankruptcy auction in which other suitors could try to top its offer.

Superior, which has ownership ties to Beijing’s municipal government, won’t be bidding on Hawker’s defense unit because of potential U.S. national-security concerns about foreign purchases of such assets.

Hawker’s defense business houses military technology and sells military training and light attack aircraft to U.S. and foreign governments. The business, called Hawker Beechcraft Defense Co., will continue to operate and could later be sold separately. If sold, Hawker said, the company would refund as much as $400 million of Superior’s $1.79 billion purchase price.

A winning bid by Superior would further the ambitions of China’s aerospace industry to move deeper into jet production, as well as give Superior itself a bigger role in the industry. Makers of small aircraft have been looking to China recently as a key source of demand as the market for business jets shrinks.”

* China launches spaceship with first female astronaut

Xinhua news: “China launched Saturday Shenzhou-9 spacecraft with the country’s first female astronaut aboard.

Shenzhou-9, atop an upgraded Long March-2F carrier rocket, blast off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China at 6:37 p.m. Saturday.

A see-off ceremony was held at the center hours before the launch. Wu Bangguo, the country’s top legislator, attended the ceremony and extended wishes to the three astronauts.

“The country and the people are looking forward to your successful return,” he said.

The first Chinese woman in space Liu Yang, 33, is joined by commanding officer Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang, who has been selected as an astronaut trainee since January 1998.

Main tasks of the Shenzhou-9 mission include the manual docking procedure conducted between the Shenzhou-9 and the orbiting space lab module Tiangong-1.

China succeeded in the automated rendezvous and docking between unmanned Shenzhou-8 spacecraft and Tiangong-1 last year.

A successful manual docking will demonstrate a grasp of essential space rendezvous and docking know-how, a big step in the country’s manned space program to build a space station around 2020.

Liu, a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) major, was a PLA Air Force pilot with 1,680 hours of flying experience and deputy head of a military flight unit before being recruited as an astronaut candidate in May 2010.

After two years of training, which shored up her astronautic skills and adaptability to space environment, Liu excelled in testing and was selected in March this year as a candidate for the Shenzhou-9 manned space mission.

“Female astronauts generally have better durability, psychological stability and ability to deal with loneliness,” Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China’s manned space program, said.

More than 50 female astronauts from seven countries have gone into space to date. The longest space flight by female astronauts lasted 188 days.”
