Ready to call off fast once Lokpal bill is passed: Hazare – The Hindu

Social activist Anna Hazare, fasting for the last five days for passage of Lokpal Bill, on Saturday said he was happy with the amended legislation presented in the Rajya Sabha and would call off his hunger strike the moment the law is enacted.

“I will call off my fast as soon as the bill is passed by the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha endorses it and the President signs it into a law,” Mr. Hazare told reporters, shortly after Rahul Gandhi made a strong pitch for passing the bill, describing it as a “very, very powerful instrument” in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Hazare said several of his expectations from the legislation have been met and expressed satisfaction over the bill which was presented in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

“I am satisfied with whatever I have seen of the draft bill and so I welcome it,” he said.

The Gandhian, who is observing his fourth fast for anti-corruption ombudsman, said some issues he wanted to be incorporated into the bill might have been left out but he was not disappointed.

* Uproar in Rajya Sabha over Wal-Mart lobbying disclosure; opposition seeks probe

Retail entry into India; two steps forward, one step back?

Times of India: “The issue of FDI in retail came to haunt the government again in Parliament with a united opposition demanding an inquiry and reply from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on reports of Wal-Mart spending huge money to lobby for entry into the Indian market.

Forcing two adjournments in the Rajya Sabha before lunch, members from BJP, CPM, CPI, SP, JD-U, Trinamool Congress, AGP and AIADMK said the measure should be withdrawn as “corruption” has come to fore now because lobbying is illegal in India.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ravishankar Prasad (BJP) said apprehensions were raised earlier also about Wal-Mart spending huge money to lobby for entering the Indian market, which has now been proved true.

“Wal-Mart has in its lobbying disclosure report to the US Senate said it has spent Rs 125 crore on lobbying and $ 3 million have been spent in 2012 itself for entering the Indian market.

“Lobbying is illegal in India. Lobbying is a kind of bribe. If Wal-Mart has said that hundreds of crores of rupees were spent in India, then it is a kind of bribe. Government should tell who was given this bribe. This raises a question mark on the implementation of FDI in retail,” Prasad said.

He was supported by members from other opposition parties with TMC leader D Bandopadhyay waving a newspaper report and CPM member P Rajeeve asking for an “independent inquiry” into the whole episode alleging that there are some reports saying Wal-Mart invested money even before FEMA was amended.

“This is bribery,” he said as the opposition members shouted slogans in favour of withdrawing FDI.

The opposition was reacting to media report that global retail giant Wal-Mart — waiting for years to open its supermarkets in India — had been lobbying with the US lawmakers since 2008 to facilitate its entry into the highly lucrative Indian market.

* Indian government committed to an effective Lokpal: Manmohan Singh

Times of India: “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said that the United Progressive Alliance UPA government is committed to an effective Lokpal to check corruption. “Our government stands committed to an effective Lokpal legislation,” Manmohan Singh said at an all-party meeting on the Lokpal bill with Rajya Sabha members. “We look forward to benefiting from the wisdom and guidance of all leaders present here in the task that we have set for ourselves,” he said.

The Lokpal bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha during the winter session last year due to opposition moving a number of amendments and the government insisting that it needed time to study them. The bill could not be put to vote even after hours of debate on the last day of the winter session.

The opposition had charged the government with shying away from a vote.”

The Lokpal (People’s Ombudsman) is the embodiment of the efforts of anti-corruption activist Shri Anna. Its protracted delay is causing not only the opposition but the person in the street to doubt the sincerity of the government in enacting the bill.
