LANZHOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the air force to enhance its capability to win and greet the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) with great achievements.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks Thursday when inspecting an air force base in northwest China’s Gansu Province.

At the combat command center, Xi used a tele-conferencing facility to inspect the troops including personnel at a radar station on a plateau over 3,600 meters above sea level and a transport and rescue regiment.

After listening to the work report of the base, Xi stressed the great significance of carrying out the Party education campaign themed “staying true to our founding mission” as the nation marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC.

Demanding a stronger sense of responsibility, Xi asked for persistent efforts in improving military preparedness to ensure that the air force can fight and emerge victorious when called upon.

The combat forces and support forces should be developed through military training under real combat conditions and joint operations, Xi said.

He also stressed the need to govern the military with strict discipline in every respect and make sure that the armed forces are highly centralized, unified, pure and solid, and that they stay secure and stable.

Xi Focus: Caring for the elderly

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — “A spring breeze blew into Sijiqing.”

This is how seniors at the Beijing-based nursing home recalled a visit in 2013 by President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

During the visit to the Sijiqing Home for the Elderly, Xi chatted with senior citizens, asked them about their health, families and lives.

Xi stressed the need to improve the management and service quality of elderly care institutions to ensure that every senior citizen can live a carefree, healthy, comfortable and happy life.

More than five years on, Liu Jinwen, a member of the elderly fashion models team at Sijiqing, said the visit had a great impact on them.

“Senior citizens should maintain a positive outlook on life and spend their old age gracefully,” Liu said. “To that end, we set up the models team to make our lives more ‘beautiful!'”

Liu is just one of the growing number of happy seniors in China.

Under Xi’s leadership, the country has over the past few years formulated a series of measures to boost elderly care and witnessed a marked improvement of the lives of the senior citizens.

BETTER NURSING HOMES

The services at nursing homes are related to the happiness of more than 200 million old people in China, especially the 40 million of them who have lost the ability in full or in part to take care of themselves.

In 2017, a four-year campaign was launched nationwide to boost nursing homes’ service quality. More rules and regulations on the management of elderly care institutions have also been drawn up.

At Sijiqing, a lot of cultural activities were organized. A “Silver Age” college was set up. And the nursing home teamed up with a local hospital to provide fast access for senior citizens to quality medical treatment.

“It’s really convenient now,” said Zhang Jin, a Sijiqing nursing home resident.

IMPROVED COMMUNITY-LEVEL SERVICES

Another field of senior care that has benefited a lot from policy support is community-level services.

Community-based elderly care is important to China’s old-age care system. About 90 percent of the Chinese elderly prefer to spend their later years at home, 6 percent at community-level elderly care centers and only 4 percent at nursing homes, according to statistics.

But community-level elderly care centers also play a key role in providing food and medical services to senior citizens who opt to stay at home.

Liu Jianguo, 86, and his wife are among the people who benefit.

The couple, living in the southeastern city of Fuzhou, go to the community elderly daycare center almost every day.

“My wife and I usually spend the whole day here,” Liu said, praising the center for its environment, facilities and staff.

Across China, all urban communities and more than half of rural communities had established community-based old-age service facilities as of the end of 2018.

In China, a comprehensive elderly care service system is taking shape, meeting the needs of the elderly who prefer to spend later years at home, community-level centers or nursing homes.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday stressed efforts to carry forward the Chinese nation’s tradition of loving, planting and protecting trees, and to involve the whole society in promoting afforestation.

Wide participation by everyone in China should be encouraged in pushing for large-scale afforestation of the country to achieve more tangible results, said Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

He made the remarks while attending a tree-planting activity in east Beijing’s Tongzhou District and planting saplings of different types of trees.

Other Party and state leaders, including Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji, Han Zheng and Wang Qishan, also attended the activity.

Xi talked with school children who are also attending the tree planting activity, asking about their study and sport exercise, urging them to foster awareness about environmental protection starting in childhood, and encouraging them to build a more beautiful motherland with their own hands.

Xi said this year marks the 40th anniversary of National Tree Planting Day. In the past 40 years, China’s forest area and forest stock volume have doubled, respectively, and China is home to the world’s largest man-made forest. The proportion of China’s contribution to the world’s vegetation increase also ranked first.

At the same time, the lack of forests and vegetation, and fragile ecological environment are still problems that need tremendous efforts, said Xi.

Xi stressed that the Chinese nation has a good tradition of loving, planting and protecting trees. Wide participation by everyone in China should be encouraged and officials at all levels should set examples as volunteer tree planters.

Efforts should be taken to promote the high-quality development of afforestation, coordinate management of mountains, waters, forests, farmland, lakes and grassland, continuously advance the building of forest city and forest countryside, Xi said.

Xi called for solid efforts to improve people’s living environment, develop a green economy, and strengthen forest management and protection to achieve more tangible results.
