BRUSSELS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) — China and Europe are partners, not rivals, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a speech here on Monday evening.
“In recent years, we have heard an argument suggesting that China has become a rival of Europe in the economic field and should be subjected to all sorts of restrictions,” Wang said while speaking at an event hosted by the European Policy Center, a think tank.
“Although it is not the mainstream view, we must raise our vigilance and not allow it to go unchecked. In fact, any cool-headed person with an objective view will see that, for China and the EU, cooperation far outweighs competition, and our areas of consensus far exceed differences. We are partners, not rivals,” he said.
Over the years, Europe has benefited tremendously from cooperation with China, Wang said.
Between 2001 and 2018, EU’s exports to China grew by 14.7 percent on average each year, more than twice the EU’s average export growth, supporting about four million local jobs. Investment of Chinese companies in the EU has also been growing. As of the end of 2017, Chinese companies have set up over 2,900 ventures in EU countries through direct investment, creating 176,000 jobs for the local people, according to Wang.
Acquisition of Volvo by China’s automaker Geely injected new energy to the Volvo factory in Ghent, Belgium, retaining and creating over 6,000 jobs, said the senior Chinese official, noting that China is now the most profitable market for European companies — as many as 7 million cars, or nearly a quarter of all automobiles sold in China, are produced by European automakers.
Wang said that despite trade friction and the world economy in downward pressure, economic and trade cooperation between China and the EU has bucked the trend and kept growing.
He pointed out that in the first 11 months of this year, trade between China and the EU, according to statistics, was estimated to grow by 7.7 percent from last year. From January to July, EU investment in China was up by 18.3 percent year on year, and sixty percent of EU companies regard China as a leading destination of investment.
China, as a major developing country with some 1.4 billion people, a 900-million-strong labor force and 120 million market entities, has solid internal growth momentum, great resilience, and enormous economic potential, said Wang, adding that China is bound to offer a new round of cooperation opportunities and share the development dividend with countries in Europe.

NAY PYI TAW, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) — China and Myanmar pledged on Saturday to strengthen communication and high-level exchanges, according to a meeting held between Myanmar’s State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and visiting Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Wang said in light of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations next year, China and Myanmar should hold a series of celebrations, plan and prepare for high-level exchanges, comprehensively push forward cooperation in areas including economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Wang said China and Myanmar should also carry forward the “Paukphaw” (fraternal) friendship, deepen the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and jointly build a community of shared future.
Wang said China is willing to promote China-Myanmar Economic Corridor from concept and plan into substantial implementation and build it into a flagship program of joint construction of the Belt and Road between the two countries.
Wang said infrastructure connectivity is framework of China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the two sides should cooperate on pressing forward projects including Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone and border economic cooperation zones.
Wang stressed that China always upholds democratization of international relations, advocates equality among countries, opposes interference in internal affairs of other countries, and disapproves of complicating bilateral issues by involving more parties.
Wang said China’s development will bring opportunities to the world, especially neighboring countries and China will stand firm with people of Myanmar during the future development process of the country.
Suu Kyi appreciated support extended by China on safeguarding national sovereignty, opposing foreign interference, promoting social and economic development of Myanmar, adding that Myanmar is willing to strengthen communication with China on international and regional issues and jointly uphold the purpose and principles of the UN Charter.
She said the two sides will seize the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations as an opportunity to strengthen high-level exchanges, jointly build the Belt and Road as well as China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
Wang also met with U Kyaw Tint Swe, minister of the State Counsellor’s Office, U Thuang Tun, minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, U Han Zaw, minister for Construction, U Kyaw Tin, minister for International Cooperation, and attended the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement on the same day.
Wang said China pays close attention to Rakhine issue and is ready to provide assistance on repatriation-related work and help promote economic development in Rakhine and improve people’s livelihoods. Meanwhile, Myanmar hopes that China continues to play an important and positive role in Rakhine issue.

NAY PYI TAW, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) — Myanmar President U Win Myint met here Saturday with visiting Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi with both sides pledging to strengthen high-level exchanges to push bilateral ties to a new high.
The Myanmar president expressed gratitude to China for its long-term support for Myanmar’s sovereignty, dignity and socio-economic development.
He hoped that both sides will seize the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations next year as an opportunity to consolidate and deepen mutual political trust, speed up the joint construction of the Belt and Road, comprehensively press forward the building of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, expand cooperation in sectors including economy and trade, education, health, and enhance cooperation and coordination in regional and international issues so as to further advance the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries.
The president also hoped that China would continue to support Myanmar in pressing forward the ongoing national reconciliation and peace process.
For his part, the Chinese state councilor said China and Myanmar are neighbors linked by rivers and mountains enjoying a “baobo” (brothers and relatives) friendship. Both countries advocate and practise the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, setting an example of equality and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries.
He pledged that China will continue to firmly support Myanmar’s efforts in pursuing a development path suited to its own national conditions, protecting its legitimate rights and national integrity in the international arena and maintaining its overall development and stability. China also appreciates Myanmar’s firm support for China on issues bearing on its core interests and major concerns, he said.
As the two countries will celebrate 70 years’ diplomatic ties next year, China is willing to join hands with Myanmar to sum up experiences in bilateral cooperation in the past years while planning for future development of bilateral ties and carrying out a series of celebration activities, Wang said.
The Chinese state councilor said China is ready to strengthen high-level exchanges with Myanmar in the new year to push the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a new high.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) — State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung Wednesday in Beijing.
Wang extended his congratulations for the expected results of the meeting between the Chinese and Vietnamese heads of Governmental Delegation on Border Negotiation and consultation between the vice foreign ministers of both sides.
Noting that the next year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam, Wang said both sides should carry forward the traditional friendship and keep the strategic position of the bilateral ties in mind.
He called on both sides to abide by the important consensus reached by the two heads of states, enhance mutual trust and cooperation, handle differences properly and take the 70th anniversary as an opportunity to push the China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.
Le Hoai Trung said the Vietnamese side was willing to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges of the two countries, push forward to align the Belt and Road Initiative with the Two Corridors and One Belt and promote the bilateral relations.

TOKYO, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday agreed that both sides should work together to further improve bilateral ties and strengthen people-to-people exchanges.
Japan and China have witnessed frequent high-level exchanges and positive progress in the improvement of bilateral relations recently, said Abe, adding that the Japanese side is eagerly looking forward to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit next spring and believes that it will be a major opportunity for promoting bilateral relations in the new era.
A stable Japan-China relationship is the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in Asia, and is also crucial to addressing current global challenges. Japan is ready to work with China to usher in a new future of bilateral relations, he said.
Japan welcomes the launch of the high-level consultation mechanism on people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and stands ready to work with China to continuously boost the affinity between the two peoples and properly handle sensitive differences so as to create a favorable atmosphere and conditions for the improvement and development of bilateral relations, he added.
Abe also said he is looking forward to further in-depth communication with Chinese leaders on bilateral ties during his visit to China next month to attend the China-Japan-ROK (Republic of Korea) leaders’ meeting.
Wang, for his part, said that with the political guidance of the two leaders and joint efforts of both sides, China-Japan relations have returned to the right track and have seen a sound momentum of improvement and development. The top leaders of the two countries had a successful meeting in Osaka in June and reached important consensus on building bilateral relations that meet the requirements of the new era.
The China-Japan relations have gone through twists and turns and the present situation has not come easily and should be doubly cherished, Wang said.
The two sides should push for continuous improvement and development of China-Japan relations from a longer-term and broader perspective, he said.
He called on the Japanese side to meet China halfway, take more positive actions, properly manage and handle differences so as to create a favorable atmosphere and conditions for the proposed major political and diplomatic agenda of the two countries.
The improvement and development of China-Japan relations not only conform to the interests of the two countries and peoples but also has great positive significance to regional peace and stability, injecting stability into the current world situation which is full of uncertainty, said Wang.
The Chinese side welcomes Abe to attend the China-Japan-ROK leaders’ meeting in China next month. China is willing to work with Japan to give full play to the role of the high-level consultation mechanism on people-to-people exchanges, usher in a new era of exchanges between our peoples, localities and youth, and create a brighter future for bilateral relations, he said.

SHIZUOKA, Japan, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) — China and Japan should usher in a new era of local-level exchanges in the 21st century, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Sunday.
Wang, who attended the Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nagoya, made the remarks during a meeting with Governor of Shizuoka Prefecture Heita Kawakatsu.
Wang said that although the relations between the two countries have experienced ups and downs, friendly people-to-people and local-level exchanges have always been the cornerstone of communication between China and Japan. More than 250 pairs of sister cities have been established between the two countries, he noted.
The two sides should keep pace with the times, jointly open up a new era of local-level exchanges in the 21st century and push for continuous improvement and development of bilateral relations, Wang said.
Shizuoka has always had a unique and important position in the friendly exchanges between China and Japan, and it is hoped that Shizuoka will continue to play a leading role in promoting the friendly cooperation between the two countries, he said.
Kawakatsu introduced the historical origin and current development of Shizuoka’s friendly exchanges with China, saying that whether the development of Japan-China relations is smooth or experiences ups and downs, the friendly feelings of the Japanese people towards China have never changed.
Shizuoka has forged friendly relations with many provinces and cities in China, especially with Zhejiang Province for 37 years, he said, adding that the people of Shizuoka are proud of their special relationship with China and their contributions to Japan-China friendship, he said.
Kawakatsu said he highly appreciates the Belt and Road Initiative and sees it as an important opportunity for Shizuoka to expand friendly cooperation with China, adding that the prefecture is ready to fully support and actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road projects.
Shizuoka’s door is always open to Chinese friends and the prefecture welcomes more Chinese tourists, he added.

MANILA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has offered condolences for the people killed in the series of strong earthquakes that devastated central and eastern Mindanao in the southern Philippines last month, saying China is ready to help the Philippine government in its efforts to rehabilitate the region.
In a message of sympathy sent to Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin on Saturday, Wang said he was shocked to learn that strong earthquakes had hit Mindanao, resulting in casualties and property damage.
“He (Wang) would like to extend sincere sympathy to the victims and the bereaved families,” the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said in a statement.
“China is willing to offer assistance to the Philippines within our capacity, and believes that under the strong leadership of the Philippine government, the Philippine people will overcome the disaster and return to normal life at an early date,” it quoted Wang as saying.
On Friday, China announced a donation of 3 million yuan (about 434,896 U.S. dollars) to help the quake victims, mostly poor farmers.
The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in an updated report on Sunday that the Oct. 29 6.6-magnitude and the Oct. 31 6.5-magnitude earthquakes that hit several central and eastern Mindanao provinces had killed 21 people and injured more than 400 others.
Rescuers were still looking for two missing villagers, the country’s disaster agency said.
The agency said the two tremors also affected more than 178,000 people in 200 villages in the region. Nearly 22,000 displaced people were staying in makeshift tents, it added.
The agency said the quakes also damaged nearly 29,000 infrastructures in the region, mostly houses, school buildings, hospitals, roads and bridges.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) — China welcomes and attaches great importance to French President Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming state visit and his attendance at the second China International Import Expo, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday.
Wang made the remarks when holding a telephone conversation with Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic counselor to Macron, adding that Macron’s visit will mark another highest level of strategic communication between the two countries’ heads of state.
France and China should, through this visit, speak in one voice to uphold multilateralism and maintain the authority of the United Nations (UN) so as to create positive energy for the world, Wang said.
This is the responsibility that should be assumed by China and France as two permanent members of the UN Security Council as well as the proper content of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, he added.
China is willing to make all necessary preparations together with France to ensure fruitful results of Macron’s visit, he said.
Bonne thanked China for its delicate preparations for Macron’s visit, and said France is willing to closely coordinate with China to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, ensure that the visit will achieve complete success and make new progress in advancing the France-China comprehensive strategic partnership.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) — State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome and outgoing Cuban Ambassador to China Miguel Angel Ramirez Ramos on two separate occasions Wednesday.
When meeting with Teshome, who was visiting China as a special envoy of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Wang said the two sides should enhance mutual political trust, firmly support each other on issues involving respective core interests.
To expand pragmatical cooperation, China will encourage more Chinese companies to invest in Ethiopia and advance cooperation in infrastructure construction, while stepping up coordination on regional and global issues and jointly safeguarding the interests of developing countries, said Wang.
The Ethiopian guest expected to cement exchanges with China on governance, and strengthen cooperation and coordination.
When meeting with the outgoing Cuban ambassador, Wang said as next year marks the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, the two sides should enhance high-level visits and exchanges at all levels and lift cooperation to new heights.
Wang also expressed China’s support for the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban government, saying China will continue to support Cuba in following the path of socialism, support its struggle to safeguard its integrity and national dignity, and fight against hegemonism.
Ramirez expressed appreciation of China’s support, saying the Cuban side will seize the opportunity of the upcoming 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties to advance cooperation.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing Sunday evening after his second informal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India and a state visit to Nepal.
Xi’s entourage, including Ding Xuexiang, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee; Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee; State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi; and He Lifeng, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and head of the National Development and Reform Commission, also returned to Beijing on the same plane.
As Xi and his entourage were leaving Kathmandu on Sunday noon local time, people of Nepal flocked to both sides of a road leading to the airport, waving flags and playing music to see the Chinese guests off.

Expressing his appreciation for the arrangements made by the Nepali president, government and people, Xi said he was very satisfied with the visit that had resulted in the upgrading of bilateral relations.
He called for joint efforts to further develop the friendly relations between the two countries.
Bhandari said Xi’s successful and fruitful visit has become a milestone in the history of bilateral ties.
The Nepal-China relationship has entered a new era and stepped on a new height, Bhandari said, adding that Nepal will resolutely work with China to promote friendly and good neighborly relations and strategic cooperative partnership.
