Foreign experts’ support will not be forgotten: Chinese premier

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Chinese people will not forget foreign experts’ support and assistance to China’s development over the 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), said Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Li made the remarks Monday when meeting at the Great Hall of the People with a group of foreign experts who received the Friendship Award, given annually by the Chinese government to honor outstanding foreign experts in China.

The meeting was also attended by vice premiers Han Zheng and Liu He and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Speaking highly of the awardees’ contributions to China, Li said that over the past 70 years, some foreign experts made significant efforts to help China overcome early difficulties, while some introduced advanced technologies, experience and management concepts to China since the beginning of the country’s reform and opening-up.

He noted that China will continue to expand international cooperation in technological innovation, further open up sci-tech projects to foreign experts and encourage them to lead and take part in the country’s sci-tech programs.

China will pursue a more proactive, open and effective policy on training competent professionals, provide more convenience for foreign experts in all respects and create a market-based, legalized and international business environment, Li said.

“We welcome more foreign talent and enterprises to China to start businesses and innovate,” he continued.

The awardees thanked Li and the Chinese government, delivered congratulations on the PRC’s 70th founding anniversary and said they will continue to play a positive part in China’s modernization and the development and progress of the human society.

They then attended a reception held Monday evening at the Great Hall of the People to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC.

A total of 100 foreign experts from 31 countries received the Friendship Award this year.

One-China principle meets shared aspiration of people: spokesperson

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — The resumption of diplomatic ties between the governments of China and Kiribati fully demonstrates that the one-China principle meets the shared aspiration of the people and constitutes an irresistible trend of the times, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said Saturday.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Kiribati’s President and Foreign Minister Taneti Mamau on Friday signed a communique on resuming diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level between the two countries at the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Geng stressed that there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government that represents the whole of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

“This is an objective fact, a universally recognized norm of international relations and a general consensus of the international community,” Geng said.

The government of the Republic of Kiribati recognizes and undertakes to stay committed to the one-China principle, sever the so-called “diplomatic relations” with Taiwan authorities and resume diplomatic relations with China. “We support this important decision which Kiribati government has made on its own as an independent sovereign state,” Geng said.

“This again fully demonstrates that the one-China principle meets the shared aspiration of the people and constitutes an irresistible trend of the times,” Geng added.

Relations between China and Pacific island nations are maintaining rapid growth. People of the two countries hold amicable feelings toward each other, he said. “It is the common expectation of all sectors of Kiribati to resume diplomatic relations and strengthen cooperation with China. It is in the fundamental and long-term interests of the two countries and peoples.”

China stands ready to strengthen pragmatic cooperation and friendly exchanges with Kiribati in various fields on the basis of the one-china principle and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to benefit the two countries and peoples, said the spokesperson.

Development goals of China, U.S. not mutually exclusive, says Chinese FM

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — The development goals of China and the United States are not mutually exclusive, and the two sides may work with each other well to attain their respective goals, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi here on Tuesday.

China and the United States both have their own development goals, which are not mutually exclusive or a zero-sum equation, Wang said in a keynote speech at a dinner co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the U.S.-China Business Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Council on Foreign Relations.

China’s renewal will provide the United States with a stable and sustainable market for the long run and a vibrant United States will provide China’s development with a better external environment, the state councilor said, when expounding on how the world’s two largest economies can benefit from each other’s prosperity.

The key is to be open-minded and respect each other’s right to development and appreciate each other’s accomplishments, he said.

For the sake of the two countries and the world, China and the United States must find a way for major countries with different social systems and cultural backgrounds to co-exist on this planet in peace and cooperate with each other for win-win results, Wang added.

The top diplomat said since China and the United States differ from each other in history, culture, social system, development path and national conditions, it is inevitable for them to have disagreements and even frictions.

However, real harmony is based upon the recognition of and respect for differences, Wang said, adding that differences should not be a chasm that prevents people from engaging with each other, but an impetus to mutual learning and shared progress.

The ups and downs in China-U.S. relations provide ample evidence that confrontation and conflict are not in the fundamental interests of both sides, and dialogue and cooperation are the only way to go, he said.

The Chinese state councilor denounced the claim by some Americans that the decades-long U.S. engagement policy has failed in its original purpose of changing China and that it is time to revert to a containment policy.

“Such an idea of modeling others according to one’s own wish is wrong from the very starting point, and cannot possibly work,” he said.

Seventy years on, it is important for the United States to avoid picking another misguided fight with the wrong country, he said.

China-Pakistan friendship unbreakable: state councilor

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday said China and Pakistan hold all-weather strategic cooperative partnership and the friendship between the two countries is unbreakable.

Meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly high-level week, Wang said the two countries have always enjoyed mutual trust, mutual understanding and mutual support.

He said China will continue to support Pakistan’s efforts to uphold its territorial sovereignty and national dignity. China-Pakistan cooperation has contributed significantly to Pakistan’s national development and improvement of its people’s livelihood.

Wang added that the two sides should work together to build the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into a model for high-quality development projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Khan, for his part, said Pakistan will firmly push forward the transformation and upgrading of the CPEC and continue to make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese projects, enterprises and personnel in Pakistan.

He said that Pakistan and China are close friends, and Pakistan thanks the Chinese government and people for standing firmly with the Pakistani people in the most difficult time.

He added that China’s support and assistance are of great significance to Pakistan’s national security and development.

Pakistan will spare no effort in maintaining bilateral friendship and will not allow any external forces to interfere in or sabotage the development of bilateral relations.

Khan introduced Pakistan’s views on the current situation in Kashmir. Wang reiterated China’s principled position on the issue.

The two sides also exchanged views on Afghanistan, Iran and other issues.

China, Solomon Islands establish diplomatic ties

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — China and the Solomon Islands signed a joint communique in Beijing Saturday on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The communique was signed by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Solomon Islands’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Jeremiah Manele after they held talks.

The communique stated that the two countries have decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level effective from the date of signature of this communique, in keeping with the interests and desire of the two peoples.

China and the Solomon Islands agree to develop friendly relations on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.

The government of Solomon Islands recognizes that there is but one China in the world, that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, according to the communique.

“The Government of the Solomon Islands shall sever ‘diplomatic relations’ with Taiwan as of this day and undertakes that it shall no longer develop any official relations or official exchanges with Taiwan. The Government of the People’s Republic of China appreciates this position of the Government of the Solomon Islands,” the communique said.

Prior to the signing of the communique, the Solomon Islands announced in a statement that it recognized the one-China principle and severed the so-called “diplomatic ties” with Taiwan.

Chinese FM to attend 74th UN general assembly session

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 24, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Monday.

As a special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Wang will also attend the UN 2019 Climate Action Summit and the 2019 Sustainable Development Goals Summit. A series of multilateral and bilateral events will also be held during the session, spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press briefing.

The 74th Session of the UN General Assembly will open at the UN headquarters in New York on Sept. 17 and the general debate will start on Sept. 24.

During the debate, Wang will give a comprehensive introduction to the path and achievements of China in the past 70 years and elaborate on China’s foreign policy and propositions regarding the international situation as well as major international and regional issues, Hua said.

“Wang will show China’s firm support for multilateralism and the UN, as well as promote China’s exchanges and cooperation with other countries and international organizations,” the spokesperson said.

Chinese VP meets Malaysian FM

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) — Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan met here Thursday with visiting Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.

Noting that China and Malaysia have enjoyed friendly exchanges for around a thousand years, Wang said the in-depth development of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership in recent years has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples.

Wang said that for any nation to achieve prosperity, it must go through a long and arduous process. He called for vision and thoughts to understand uncertainties in today’s world, make wise choices, seize opportunities and overcome challenges.

Saifuddin said Malaysia attaches great importance to developing relations with China, firmly supports and will actively participate in the Belt and Road cooperation.

Malaysia opposes trade wars and will continue to expand cooperation with China in economy, trade, and people-to-people exchanges, he said, expressing Malaysia’s readiness to play a positive role in promoting ASEAN-China relations.

China, Afghanistan, Pakistan pledge efforts to safeguard regional peace, stability

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — The 3rd China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue was held here in Islamabad on Saturday, and the three sides stressed the need to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability amid the changing and complicated circumstances.

The situation in south Asia is going through profound and complicated changes, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the meeting.

Progress has been achieved in the peace talks between the United States and the Afghan Taliban, and there is an important opportunity for Afghanistan’s peace and reconciliation, he noted.

Meanwhile, some historical disputes have again escalated, undermining peace and stability in the region, Wang said.

In the international arena, unilateralism, protectionism and hegemony have threatened and challenged the interests of developing countries, he added.

China, Afghanistan and Pakistan are close neighbors with a shared future, Wang said. The three countries share the aspirations to safeguard regional peace and achieve lasting stability, the need to push forward Belt and Road development and regional connectivity, as well as the expectation to achieve sustainable development and improve people’s livelihood.

The three sides should work together and make new efforts to push forward the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process in Afghanistan, improve the relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, promote trilateral practical cooperation as well as jointly combat terrorism, among others, he said.

For their part, Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi made positive assessment on the progress achieved in cooperation and exchange on the three major themes within the framework of the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue, namely political mutual trust and reconciliation, development cooperation and connectivity, and security cooperation and fighting terrorism. They also spoke highly of China’s contribution in pushing forward the cooperation among the three countries.

The two foreign ministers said China, always a good neighbor and a trustworthy friend of Afghanistan and pakistan, has long played an important and positive role in promoting Afghanistan’s peace and reconciliation process, pushing forward the improvement of the relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan and maintaining peace and stability in the region.

With the complicated regional situation which is undergoing fast change, Afghanistan and Pakistan are willing to boost communication and coordination with China so as to deepen cooperation in such fields of economy and trade, people to people exchange, communication and connectivity, jointly build the Belt and Road, join hands in combating terrorism including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, maintaining regional peace and stability as well as promoting regional development and prosperity, they said.

The foreign ministers from China, Afghanistan and Pakistan reached agreement on pressing forward the realization of lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan through the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process and implementing common connectivity programs with international financial institutions including the World Bank, among others.

The three foreign ministers also agreed to hold the 4th China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue in 2020 in China.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Bruneian Princess Hajah Masna here on Thursday.

Wang said China and Brunei have been understanding, respecting and supporting each other, setting an example for the peaceful coexistence between large and small countries.

Calling the two countries important partners in the building of the Belt and Road, Wang said China supports Brunei’s economic diversification strategy and is willing to work with Brunei in promoting joint ocean development and cooperation in the East ASEAN Growth Area.

Masna said as the next year had been designated as the Year of Tourism Between Brunei and China, the Bruneian side will grasp the opportunity to expand people-to-people exchange and promote the development of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries.

China, DPRK pledge to further promote bilateral cooperation

PYONGYANG, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) — China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) pledged on Wednesday to promote friendly cooperation between the two countries.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the DPRK, which is of great importance for both countries, visiting Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a meeting here with Ri Su Yong, member of the Political Bureau and vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) of the DPRK.

Despite changes in the international arena, the traditional friendship forged by the leaders of the former generations of both countries has withstood the test of time and become a shared asset of the two countries, said Wang.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un have injected fresh vitality into the relations between the two parties and the two countries, Wang said.

“We should abide by the important consensus reached by the top leaders of the two countries, shoulder the responsibility to maintain, consolidate and advance the traditional China-DPRK friendship, and promote friendly cooperation between the two countries in various fields,” he added.

Under Kim’s leadership, the WPK has created a new strategic line which is in accordance with the fundamental interests of the country, the nation and the people of the DPRK, said Wang, noting that he believes that the DPRK will overcome all difficulties and achieve its strategic goal.

Speaking of China’s development, Wang said that socialism with Chinese characteristics has achieved great success and revealed promising prospects.

History will prove that China’s development and rejuvenation are an irresistable trend that cannot be stopped, he said, adding that China and the DPRK should conduct more communication and exchanges, understand each other, trust each other and support each other in safeguarding their mutual interests and legitimate rights.

Ri, also the director of the International Department of the WPK Central Committee, said that Kim and Xi have met many times in recent years and charted the course for the development of bilateral relations.

Wang’s visit to the DPRK on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries is of great significance for the implementation of the consensus reached by the top leaders of the two countries, he said.

The DPRK is willing to join China in strengthening exchanges at different levels and push forward the practical and friendly cooperation between the two sides, he said.

Extending his congratulations on China’s achievements and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Ri said that the DPRK side will continue to firmly support the policies and measures of the CPC and the Chinese government on issues concerning China’s core interests, including the issues of Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on the Korean Peninsula situation.
